Gday

What would be the main reason for fuel getting into the sump and mixing with the oil - could this also damage the bearings.

Adam
I know very little regarding the Shadow series of cars, others will know better than I, however could you please clarify what is happening, how you discovered the oil and what is the extent of the contamination, are you sure it is fuel and not coolant?
Unburnt fuel in the sump is usually due to excess fuel in the combustion space, finding it's way down the cylinders.
Any contamination of the oil is not good, however on most engines a certain amouunt of "blow by" occurs, this is one reason why oil needs to be changed regularly
Regards
David

Hi David,

I'm sure its fuel not coolant as I have conducted the chemical coolant test and it is not changing colour - the oil has a very strong smell of fuel and is very liquid as well!

Thanks for the response.

Another very remote possibility could be atmospheric condensate from humid air finding its way into the engine sump and subsequently collecting there.

Yes thats true - im about to get the sump removed as we found a heap of sludge when we first changed the oil- We did a engine oil flush during recommisioning but we still believe that more sludge is in the sump - not withstanding that even the new oil is fuel contaminated. The car sat for nearly 15 years hence the carb rebuild - fuel tank cleaned and new fuel pump and fliters done. Im hoping like hell the cylinders, rings and bearings dont nead to be replaced hence me reaching out to the brains trust.

Check carb floats for holes, they will have fuel in them if they're defective.
Float levels too as well as needle valve function.

Hi, what year is the Shadow ? Does it have HIF carbs ? If so check for flooding due to sticking floats. We have had this issue with carb Spirits and our rover 2200 TC (P6). Often they will flood without necessarily running fuel down the overflow or side of the carb.

Adam,

Yours is an early car, and the answer to Mark Aldridge's question regarding HIF carbs is, "No."

You have SU HD carbs (I'm not sure if HD6 versus HD8, unless the number is associated with number of cylinders, then it would be an HD8, but someone else will know).

See this message on Rolls-Royce Forums for a photo posted by Dounraey of HD8s.

Yes mine is an early one and that was a great link thank you - We did alos strip and rebuild the carb as well as put a new fuel pump in as well as change fuel lines to the carb - so im wondering if we may have an over pressure problem

Clean the flame trap! It is your PCV valve.
