Finally, I have everything working on my newly purchased 1968 Fix-Head Coupe! The starting issue was resolved by replacing the ignition coil and spark plugs. The car now starts instantly at any temperature! The car idles perfectly, but I have to really press the accelerator pedal almost half way to move the car forward. It shifts through the gears fine, but just doesn't have the power like my other Shadows. If I press the pedal too much, the engine will backfire. Once going, it will cruise easily at 75MPH! The carbs have the correct oil in the pots. The backfire almost stops when the engine gets hot. Again, I just don't have the power! Any ideas? Richard |

Don't own a Shadow, but is the spark advancing properly, being a 68, it should have mechanical advance weights in the distributor. Check that the lobes are free on it's shaft, if it's stuck, the spark won't advance. This also applies if it has electronic ignition, but being a 68, it should still have points. If this is the case, you may want to check the weights themselves are free and their return springs are in good shape. Sounds like the distributor may simply need cleaning. Check timing with a strobe light, and see if the clamp has not come lose. If it has vacuum advance, check the diaphragm with a vacuum pump. Check the vacuum line to the advance. |

Hi Richard. I bought my Bentley T 22 years ago at auction. It was gutless and behaved very much like your Shadow - full throttle needed to make it go. The problem was caused by the ignition timing being set to 20 degrees AFTER top-dead-centre. (I used a fancy strobe with a built-in rev-counter and marked arrows on the front pulley.) I did not believe this until I loosened the distributor clamp and turned it towards the "right" place - revs went from 800-ish to 2500. After resetting the throttle stop and getting the ignition spot on, I reversed down the drive and pointed the car along the road and floored the throttle as was "normal". The back tyres screamed. Check the ignition timing. Alan D. |
