I've got a strange problem with starter motor on my '76 shadow 1. To make it turn I need to hold key in start position for about 30 secs then it suddenly turns and starts. As engine warms up it could be about 10 secs, then when fully hot key turns starter straightaway.
I've only recently bought car so don't know when this problem developed.
Any thoughts on what causes this?

Thanks

Actually, the problem is not that strange. If you search this forum, or rollsroyceforums.com, you will find many a tale (including mind) of original Lucas starters that eventually decide they are not going to reliably crank for a number of different reasons.

One thing to definitely check, though, is the state of your battery. The OEM Lucas starter requires quite a bit more "oomph" from the battery than modern starters do.

For myself, I replaced the Lucas unit (which still resides under the steps in my garage) with a new gear-reduction type sourced from what was at the time called British Starters, and is now Classic Car Performance. See this webpage: Rolls Royce Shadow/Bentley T - High Torque Starter

Never had an issue with starting afterward.

You might also have an issue with the starter solenoid or relay, but that 30 second wait thing makes me think not.

I've checked up on threads here about starter. I thought of replacing with High-torque starter. I did this on my last shadow after starter disintegrated with a grinding noise.
I've found a receipt for starter, rebuild about 1000 miles ago, but 5 yrs ago. I'm am hoping its a poor wiring fault, maybe it takes 30 seconds to create heat/ contact in connection? Relay clicks straightaway, outside of starter looks clean - not covered in oil, grime.
I'll check wiring and earth connections when I can face crawling under car.
Thanks for reply
