If I had read the manual or if I had thought a bit before posting I would have realised that the lamp is also the bulb failure warning lamp. What a prune.

Think before engaging keyboard.

If it's any consolation: I didn't know that the handbrake light was also a bulb failure warning lamp.

These posts make me feel less daft. Thanks.

It is mentioned in the handbook - page 32 figure 20 in my copy. I've owned the car for 22 years and never had a brake-light bulb failure, until now.
