The temp gauge in my 70 Shadow just started to misread on Sunday. It now starts in the middle of the range when cold and goes high when reaching operating temp.

Failing sensor?

If it is the same as a Spirit, try A Classic Mini sensor.

I'll look and see what connection is on the current one and see if I have something that will just drop in. I'd rather not butcher the wiring harness if I don't have to.
