Sheriffe, behind switchbox with key, there is a Burgess? micro switch that opens/closes when key inserted in lock, sticking?

On my Silver Shadow 11 the ignition must be on before any gear can be selected, it's a safety mechanism to stop people inadvertently changing gear to neutral and causing the car to roll down a hill. I presume the Silver Spirit gear selector is designed the same way but I'm not certain.

I’m not sure you understand how the system works, on the early cars you can’t get the key out unless the lever is in park, moving the lever after the key is out will leave it in park as there is no power to the gear change actuator circuit, on later cars a relay would select park when the key was removed.
