Two things, how did you do it, and do all RR-SS windows go slow going up? |

Larry, A feature length documentary about Silver Shadow windows, I love it. Unlike Game of Thrones, you probably know each viewer by name. |

Mike and David, Just a CLA, no diodes and such. I also pulled the anti drop clutches so when my window motors are running they are not powering the clutch release solenoids at the same time. My windows do drop 2 mm at the top of the stroke. Maybe I can film that for the documentary. Maybe, This time I'll use the ken burns effect with a voice over of a forum post. |

Video of Shadow windows in the wild. Here's a video of the speed of the windows in 1966 as seen at the Earls court motor show. Looks like it goes down with authority at least. I think the diode thing is probably a patch to get windows with hard grease in the gearbox to work OK. I think the real answer is get the wrench out, set everything back to original and the windows will work fine. https://youtu.be/nkiqGgREk5E?t=365 |

Window function with the clutches removed. I pulled the clutches on the window mechanism when I first got the car. My windows were very slow, so I rebuilt them and in the process removed the clutches. In retrospect, I think the clutches are probably just fine, but I'm not going back in the doors until something breaks. I'll try and film a video of the window function with properly lubricated gear boxes and chains without the clutches. There is a small but visible drop after the windows hit the top of the frame. |

Ross Just to be pedantic, I take it by clutches you mean solenoid brakes. I believe the very early cars did have clutches as a safety feature, not least to protect childrens fingers. However, they found that after a while the clutches would slip causing owners to return to their locked cars to find the windows down. They therefore introduced a solenoid brake to prevent the window slip. On a later iteration of the mechanism they deleted the clutches and childrens fingers but kept the solenoid brakes. I too have removed the solenoid brakes with no bad effect. The problem with them is with age they tend to not fully disengage and the brake part drags against the window, causing it to run very slowly or not at all. This does mean the weight of the window rests on the nylon gearwheel at the base of the winder, but the gearwheel seems to be well up to this job. |

Geoff, I do mean the brake solenoids. My windows fall a good 3 ~ 5 mm after reaching the top and letting off the switch. I don't hear wind noise and taking the doors apart isn't high on my "things I like doing" list. |

Ross My guess is the brake solenoids would stop that slight drop and also prevent the weight of the window bearing down on the gearwheel, but like I said it's caused me no problems, after 3-4 years - the gearwheel is still intact. btw - was great to see you in the photo at the Goodwood meet. It's always good to put a face to a name. I will definitely time my next visit to the UK to coincide with the annual meeting - either next year or the one after. Regards |
