Good afternoon Technical Experts. Finally back up and driving the shadow - with trepidation I might add. On a recent trip to the Gold Coast, the oil lamp decided to do a "number" and began flickering on and off! Checked oil level and this was ok, no serious noises coming from engine compartment so assumed the oil was flowing ok. Some months ago the sensor/wiring had come adrift resulting in the lamp being on permanently - this was corrected by Graham Sparks. Can anyone suggest the reason or reasons for the flickering lamp? |

Before you become concerned. Buy a simple mechanical oil pressure gauge. The type people install on/under the dash. Attach to engine with a "T" fitting. Connect factory sensor to the open port of "T" fitting. Run the tube to driver floor/foot area. Connect gauge with tube. Do not mount the unit, use plastic tie straps to support it where you can see it. Take the car for a nice long drive. Note oil pressure when light comes on. Remove the gauge unit when done. Note: if the tube breaks, generally under the bonnet, it makes massive smoke, and a mess. Here is a basic list of possible issues. #1. Wire insulation damage. #2. Pressure sensor defect. #3. Oil contaminated with high levels of RR363 or fuel. #4. Oil pump failing. #5. Engine bearing issue. |

Graeme, It is likely that your previous fault has returned and the wire from the oil pressure warning lamp switch to the warning lamp is intermittently shorting to ground. John |

It is most likely the oil pressure switch is faulty. The switch is a standard Lucas oil switch and also fitted to many other Brit cars. MY car has an Austin Metro one fitted
