I've read on this forum about the propensity for the canister oil filter to spring a leak at the seal if not tightened sufficiently (or if the seal is not seated?). This recently happened whilst bleeding the brakes. I had previously changed the oil filter and seal, followed by torquing the canister bolt to the spec torque. My only way to stop the leak eruption was to tighten the filter bolt even more. My question is whether I need to "re-seat" the canister seal or live with an over-tightened filter housing. Would prefer to keep things original than convert to spin-on. | ||

Harrison the fact that you have ask the questions indicates that you are a bit perturbed, for peace of mind if it was me I would change the seal again making sure that its position is correct before tightening. Richard. | ||

I swapped out my canister for a spin on when I had my 1972 and no problems hence. | ||

Harrison, the only time I've ever seen a canister type leak was when square section seal rolled whilst fitting. It is SO easy to do! Fitted 100's?overs years on Cloud/Shadow(1). Conversion kit for spin-on is great idea, takes away worry-how tight. | ||

Still to use new old stock so will keep mine original. Never had a problem after fitting new each time filter it is replaced. Use grease to locate square "o" ring and for lube of ring when tightened up. | ||

Same protocol: "lube the seal" whether you use the old square or a new spin on. | ||

sorry, forgot to mention that! lube seal/canister, what evere make filter being changed on. |
