Denis, See the booklet, Chassis Number & Production Changes through SY Series, which covers all of the production changes and the chassis numbers at which they occurred. If the engine size change was in 1970 then you'll find it there. However, the entire section for the SY series is not so long that you cannot quickly scan through it and find it in there somewhere. Hi Denis, In Dec 1969 the Shadow changed to a 6.75 litre engine at engine number 8742, therefore your ehgine is a 6.25 litre. Although you state your car is 1970, that may be when it was first registered, rather than when built. Hope this helps Regards Alan |

Yep, and the entry that reads: 8742 6 3/4 Liter engine is right there in the December 1969 entry in the booklet. Denis, what you're looking for, regardless of the spec change in question, is for that spec change in the right hand column, then refer to the chassis number to its left. Anything lower than that chassis number does not have that change while anything that number or higher does (or at least does until another spec change to the same thing comes along, and that would not include the 6.75 Liter engine). Easy way to tell, 6-1/4 engine has twin point distributor, 6-3/4 has single point with external dwell adjuster. Long stroke engine at 8742, then for about another 110 consecutive chassis, then no more cars until 9001. |

A quick method to check what engine size just by looking, the 6320cc engine has spark plugs in the lower position below the exhaust manifold making removal a pig of a job. The Shadow 6750cc engine plugs are all above the manifold. |

Incorrect Patrick, all Shadows have plugs above manifold. This was changed when model changed from Cloud111 to Shadow |

Ah the memmory!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks for the correction. As for the distributor yes but many seem to have been converted to the later single contact or electronic type. So engine number is the safe way. Will a 6320cc engine fit in place of a 6750cc engine if so may be worth checking numbers if the car has been got at over the years and power is not up to speed. |
