Your accumulator should be opened and the diaphragm inspected or replaced along with a new valve. These are a pain to remove and once out it would be a good choice to be thorough. |

If you don't get any direct recommendation for a RR/Bentley focused shop, definitely have a chat with the gentlemen (and/or ladies) who are aircraft mechanics at your local small airport. Aircraft use a wide variety of nitrogen charged accumulators and virtually all aircraft maintenance shops have the setup to charge them. Brian |

Brian, Excellent suggestion especially for those of us who live in regional areas remote from R-R/B specialist workshops. Thank you |

Thanks for the comments gents. Much advise around. I would just like to try a re-charge first. I dont believe the diaphrams are split, as i still have some reserve pressure (about 8 pedal pumps) so believe it might just be a gradual loss of N2 over time & i`ve been told they can be re-charged on the car. I have the charge port size so will get a flying hose made up with a regulator and just buy a D size N2 cylinder. If all goes well will update post and should be available for other members. But still open to other opinions/advise. |

Hi Roger Welcome to the forum. Regards the charge port - make sure you use the correct adapter. Here's some great advice from one of the contributors to this forum in response to a previous owner who was about to recharge his accumulators: "I'm concerned that you may have used a female 3/8"-18 NPT fitting instead of a 5/8"-18 UNF coupler. The NPT pipe fitting will screw onto the charging port partway because they both have 18tpi and have a similar diameter but the NPT fitting has a tapered thread. This means that a maximum of one thread is engaged in holding the charging port in place under 1000lbs. of pressure. That terrifies me." The correct adapter can be bought here: https://www.britishtoolworks.com/product-page/accumulator-charging-tool |

HI roger, I live on the other side of this great and lucky country, in Melbourne. This September 2018 I recharged my Shadow 2 accumulators, making my own gear in house. The adaptor can be bought from the US supplier mentioned in a previous post or made by yourself or a local engineering workshop. The correct thread is 5/8inch 18 TPI UNF parallel. I removed the accumulators from the car by unscrewing them with a rattle gun and some brute force. Then I recharged them using a disposable N2 cylinder intended to pump DIY beer. The coupler was a paint ball accessory. All available on EBay However the gas immediately leaked back out again! To discover why that might be I dismantled the spheres by using a home made rig and more brute force. The plastic non return valve fitted, not the original equipment, steel ball, was deformed and when it became disturbed by the re gassing attempt it would not reseat. Incidentally the diaphragms appeared to be in perfect condition! I replaced the ball seals with a new plastic ones, re assembled the spheres and then recharged them. As a final touch and as recommended by other forum members of this excellent site sealed the charging with thread sealant. |
