Last time used the starter would not be as quick to engage a job to check one day. To day thought about some tests with the cooling system. Turn the key and just a click and more clicks, then the starter motor works. keeping the engine running to put the car up off the ground. Convinced the motor has given up as it is still the original, so no tests carried out on the solenoid or motor, disconnect the batt lead and start to remove starter leads. 7/16" nut not as tight as it should have been so removed to see possible fault. Will remove all the connecters and clean to-morrow, While up in the air some pixs of the tow bar. Hope it will be just a failed connection. |

Pat, a good old sanding and you be as right as rain.ie sand nut, cable connector and spring washer, you might consider doing same to upper nut /connector.Had similar situation with the old Shadow 1 , the above rectified situation for a time. |

While you're at it check all the earth strap connections, they tend to suffer from corrosion too and can cause the starter to be lazy. |

If you sand it you will most likely remove the cad coating and it will corrode alot easier. Why not replace with fresh hardware and coat with waterproof grease. |

Fit a new nut and spring washer. The spring washers tend to get weak over time causing a poor connection which then overheats. This cooks the plating off and they rust heavily. It's a common problem. You can usually see signs of arcing on them. A good place to FTP though |

Job done, removed tother nut and washer cleaned all contact areas and threads with dremal. Coated with high temp cooper grease on assembly. Used n/cad nut that is twice as thick as the original with cad plated flat washer no spring as IMO this is the real cause of fault. Now the Lucas starter spins just like new! First time the car stayed out in the rain for years!

Patrick, what type of lift do you have ? I am considering a lift to use outside at home. I am getting reluctant to crawl under cars ! Mark |

Mark, some old pixs, the lift is an old Omer concord 35 free standing. Located outside for the quick jobs! Have the controls in a small enclosure by the side, the lift has a height of over 6ft. hydraulic electric with position locks for the required working height operated by air.
