Hi our shadow 2 has a partially collapsed torque arm which now rubs on the propeller shaft rotating flange. This MAY have been the result of a sideways pull by a tow truck driver when the car was recovered for a starter problem recently, that problem is now fixed. I re bent it while still in the car, which is of course not the best solution! That repair lasted for a while, that is until I drove over one too many traffic calmers during its test run. My favourite repair man cannot obtain a replacement in Australia he has told me. Does any forum member know of one ? the car is SRH 31710 an Australian delivery.....regards |

This may help from my mod years ago. Cause, maybe the worn mount and a bit of a heavy right foot. http://au.rrforums.net/forum/messages/17004/2562.html?1110566478 |

Hello Leonard, There is an independent RR &B parts specialist in the UK called Flying Spares. They list both new and second hand torque arms in their on line parts catalogue and they ship world wide. Hope this helps. Kind regards, Chris |

Thanks for your input people........a new one not sure if it is genuine 600 pounds a rather sad salt affected one 100 pounds + postage but nothing in Australia available yet! Now I have discovered what a torque arm does it seems remarkably flimsy for the job compared to the other components of the rear sub frame member. Amazing that it is even sensitive to a heavy right foot!....regards |

Leonard, mine had lateral damage due to the worn cross member bushes. The cross member was also slightly kinked on the diff fixing so a new fabricated plate was made and welded in. If a new or repaired torque arm is fitted with a slightly kinked cross member the diff assembly will resort back with out of true running alignment. Noises of sorts will be heard. BTW the torque arm is designed for vertical up and down torque control loading operation. |

Thanks again forumisters! for your v useful help. The torque arm is now back in service on SRH 31710. Nowhere locally could I source a new replacement so I had it repaired by an engineering workshop who panel beat it back to its original shape, then stiffened it by welding an extra layer to the bottom web and riveting a short vertical rib from that. I am convinced now that the torque arm was distorted when the car was recovered by the tow truck operator and then it subsequently collapsed driving over road humps later on. All this begs the question where can towing hooks be placed safely when pulling the car backwards. I cannot see anywhere myself, does anybody else have any ideas? |

Generally speaking, towing hooks and Rolls-Royces do not go together. Look at the way the rear suspension is attached and you will understand. It is not really part of the chassis in the conventional way of thinking about a "chassis". The Shadow is a body with subframes attached front and rear. Others will know better but I can imagine that you may have to use something on the front subframe as an attachment point (but not tow hooks!) and then run straps under the body to the rear where hooks can be attached to loops at the ends of the two straps. Even that set up is fraught with risk. Pull sideways and you really are asking for trouble. Just thinking out loud so to speak! . |

Leonard, I made a plate to go under the two rear bumper bracket bolts with a big eye welded on. I'll try and find a picture. |

A perfect job in the correct place, I made a tow bar that could be used. Hope I never have a RR car that FTP, have had probs but so far have always returned home without a flat bed. |

Patrick, I made up a design for a tow hitch for the Shadow that hooked on the bumper mount dolts. With the roof rack I find less need for one. Once installed, I painted it red. I'm on holiday, but I'll get a pic when I get back. |

Hi Ross, A very nice FTP accessory, well done! I am trying to imagine it installed. Do you have it permanently mounted or fit it when needed? Perhaps another photo when you return from your holidays, if that is possible. Could I also, rather cheekily, ask for one of your RR roof rack? |

Leonard, I have not had an FTP as of yet, but when I got the gray SS it was on a flatbed and the tow truck driver hooked the subframe and damaged the rear left mount.(the mount is a little weak IMO) so I welded up the one in the picture from some plate and a forged lifting eye. It bolts permenantly to the two bolts that secure the rear bumper mount to the rear unibody frame horn. That is the only thing I could really bolt to back there. If you were going to make one you could just have a local welder plasma cut the whole thing from a single plate of 6mm for you. I have measurements in a notebook somewhere. I'll try and dig them up when I get back. The roof rack, well that's another story... |

Here is the image of the hook welded to the bumper mount as viewed from under the car. Here is the bumper mount from the outside of the car behind the bumper.

I was looking at the earlier post where I said I had made the mount. I clearly just welded a forged lifting eye directly to the bumper mount. It wouldn't be hard to make a mount if you wanted it to be reversible, but it was clearly easier to just weld on a hook and paint it red. |

On the front end I have a hook on the drivers side subframe. I used a graded bolt through an existing hole in the frame. Not as robust as the rears, but it should allow the car to be towed.
