Hi Folks

I am about to order a new speedometer cable from FS for around $200. It's the one that runs from the the cruise control regulator to the speedometer head. I know there are various other options from specialist companies, but since the saving would only be around 50 or so bucks, I would rather go with the OEM part.

However, before I order the part, I just wanted to check if there are any ways of repairing my existing cable. The problem is the outer cable is frayed at the speedometer head and catches on the inner cable making a clicking noise. I know I can buy new outer cable for $1 per foot, so I was wondering if there is any way of removing the old cable ends from the existing cable and fastening them to the new outer cable. Has anyone done this?

Geoff

The fitting on the ends of is swaged on.

Maybe a hydraulic flex pipe swaging machine will do the job.

Try pipe guys.

We used to have Smiths speedo cable made while we waited and the guy just cut the outer with an Iris cutter. The inner was crushed square with a press and cut with a grinder. Bingo a speedo cable. Check out motor bike shops especially brit iron ones.

Turn the cable round so the noisy end is at the cruise control.

Also there is a made to measure company in The UK that makes speedo cables and other such stuff. Google speedo cable.

Maybe glue the fittings on a new outer. The forces are very low.

Don't put any lub at the speedo head end because the lub can fin its way into the speedo and splatter inside the instrument.
