The very first hydramatic gear boxes were made by GM for RR. Then RR got a licence from GM to manufacture the gear box the first RR prototypes didn't work properly because RR made some parts with a better finish which GM explained that the rough finish is needed. The settings in the gear box are different from the GM box and some parts look very alike but are different. The licence from GM allowed RR to make boxes for other car makers such as BMC. All Brit cars using a hydramatic box, the box was made by RR. RR built a factory at crewe to make gearboxes for anybody they were allowed to supply. The turbo hydramatic by the time that was introduced the public we used to reliable autos so makers of big engined cars adopted the turbo box because it's smooth and bullit proof. The demand couldn't be entirely met ny Crewe so GM supplied boxes as well. The boxes made by Crewe for other makers are the same as GM. The ones made for RR cars are different in minor ways. Which make no difference to the service and repair. The turbo box can be rebuilt diy using easy to make tools. Their are kits available at different levels depending on what's wrong. The other parts are readily available new and used. Only bit is the converter which is not diy. There are you tube Videos showing the process. If one examines a auto box and follows how the clutches and bands work in conjunction with the hydraulic control bit, one will find that it's not that complicated. First auto box I had a go at was a BW 35. Which quite light and very easy to take apart. I had the gear trains laid out in order so I could turn them to work out ratios by counting teeth. If worked fine afterwards The hydramatic is a different kettle of fish because it is set by selective fitting and best left to a specialist with lots of spare parts. The hydramatic is a good gearbox and set the stage for many other gearbox makers. The turbo is even better because it has 3 variable ratios rather than 4 fixed ones. I have taken a few autoboxes out of RR cars and never once was any problem endured apart from adjusting brake servos sometimes. RR is about the same as any automatic car to repair. Quite often new friction bits and brgs and it's ok.

Bob Out of interest, how did you remove the auto boxes. Did you lift them out of the engine bay with the engine as a complete unit, from underneath, autobox only, or did you lift the body off the subframe. Geoff |
