Hi Folks,

Well, "The time has come", the walrus said...

I have the rebuild kit and tools, so I need to remove the A6 A/C compressor. The system is already discharged, so I am in "remove, rebuild, replace" condition.

Does anybody have any advice how to do this? There are the belts that drive the compressor, and they look to me like they drive everything else, too. Are there any mistakes looming that I need to foresee and avoid?

Thanks for the help,

Chris.

Chris

Can't help with the rebuild but here's a word of warning. The compressor is heavy, so take care how you remove it. When I removed mine I was lifting it whilst standing at the side of the car, arms outstretched using my abdomen as a pivot point against the front fender. This resulted in such force against my abdomen wall that it resulted in, without wishing to give the full details, a disturbance to my digestive system. Ever since then, I always put the compressor in a sling, suspend it from a pole with a helper the other side of the car to maneuver it into position. It may be that I am just very weak, but I do advise caution if you have not removed one before.

Dear Chris,
There are many Youtube videos on this subject. The A6 is a classic American compressor - lots of literature out there. There is a special tool that they show on these videos for putting the seal back. Seal kits are really cheap in the States too. Such a great country!!! I have yet to see how they establish if the bores of the cylinders and other mechanicals are in good order. Let me know if you find that out.
Thanks
Omar

Hi Omar,

Yes. I have a link to a "Rebuild Video" that I've watch a few times. My question is less A6 specific and more Silver Shadow specific and that is the part of the project before I rebuild where I remove the A6 from the engine compartment.

Thanks for the help,

Chris.

Dear Chris,
Apart the words of warning that have been beautifully captured by Geoff - the rest is really straight forward. one wire, one bolt for the hoses and the bolts that secure the compressor on. That's about it.
Here is another bit of advice in case we have not been clear enough..... the compressor weighs a hell of a lot and its far enough away from the side of the car for most people to not have the strength to support it. Get help!!
Good luck
Omar

Actually - I should explain that my reference was to pain and then later, severe colic - lol.

It's lucky that you're not a horse, then. We might have had to shoot you!
