A friend has contacted me to say that he has one of the last Shadow IIs made and that he loves the car. Only problem is, he is not technically minded and the engine does not start. It is SRX 40202 and has had an interesting hstory of being sent to Lebanon twice and Kuwait once for repairs from its home in Jordan. There is no Rolls-Royce garage in Jordan. The engine cranks but does not fire. I am led to believe that the engine has been replaced once already. I cannot begin to imagine what level of non-standard repairs the car would have had to date, but here is the question. The owner wants someone to look at the car to see what needs doing to it. If anyone is going to Amman in Jordan over the next few weeks and can spare a couple of hours to take a look at this car - please let me know and i will connect you to the owner. | ||

Had a similar problem some time ago it turned out to be the ballast resistor which is part of the coil.Check for a spark at the plugs any garage could help doesnt have to be a RR specialist.Could need a new coil that has a ballast resisitor.This gizmo allows a regular spark that doesnt fluctuate there gives the points a longer life. | ||

Dear Barry, You are so right. Not only is this a possible reason - a simple fuse or a relay or even the oil pressure switch - or so many other simple issues. Then again - it can have a plethora of "jungle repairs" that between them would challenge the sharpest amongst us. It really needs someone physically looking at the car - or a person who can go through a systematic troubleshooting excercise in the field, whilst under our guidance. Thanks for your response though. Tempted . . .but apparently it's the wrong time of the year weather-wise!  Even non-messed around with ones can be a nightmare with a lack of maintenance and a mix of heat, dust and potholes. Tricky to know where to start as you rightly point out Omar. It could be a five minute job or a five day job  . Best of luck though. | ||

Barry Don't SS II cars have that Lucas "Opus" ignition module, an early type of electronic ignition system, doing away with points? Jonas | ||

Thanks for the responses. I have since spoken to the man who helped maintain the car and this was his tale: "The engine had been badly overhauled using parts from Chrysler/Dodge engines; and the engine now runs badly and gives off white smoke". At this stage I suggested a complete change of tact. The owner will now send the car to Dubai for us to find him a suitable donor car that will result in him ditching the Jungle repaired unit for an engine that has never been disassembled before. We cant be dealing with all that many variables and expect the car to run properly. |
