Sounds like it's from the fuel receiver dump valve. Any excess fuel from the float chambers is sucked into the weakener, and then deposited on the ground when the engine is switched off and the vacuum ceases.

You will probably find that one or both of the float chamber needle valves is leaking. A simple replacement job.

Richard,

Check very carefully around the bases of your SU carbs. I had one develop a big leak once that was not particularly easy to see, but it was quite easy to smell. You could also have a small crack developing in the fuel hose somewhere and fuel only makes it out when under pressure from the pump.

I suggest this because your post, to my reading, says you were getting this smell while the car was still running. Although Bob's theory definitely could apply, the dump valve location is far forward of where you're seeing fuel drip from and is located close enough to the ground that it seems awfully unlikely that it could end up where you're seeing the fuel pool.

I've noticed that there is often a slight weep of fuel from the top of the A bank float chamber with the ignition on and the engine not running. However this stops as soon as the engine fires and doesn't reappear until I go to restart it. I'm also tempted to overhaul the carbs before I put SRH24518 back on the road.
