Hi - in the circuit/wiring diagram for the Silver Shadow II with automatic antenna, it doesn't show how the antenna motor is switched off when the antenna is in the either fully up, or down position. The relay switches the 12 volts to two different coils in the motor which makes it go up or down, but I can't see how that 12 volt feed is ever turned off.

The earlier Silver Shadow's had a switch on the dashboard, that would obviously turn off the 12v supply, but can't see how that works on the automatic version.

I ask, as I've recently installed a second hand original RR antenna, and it doesn't power off in either the fully up, or fully down position.

Anyone have any ideas? Vehicle is SRH40222

Hi John,

Have you got a automatic aerial or a manual electric aerial?

For a manual you need an up and down switch.

if you have an automatic one then . .. .

Most automatic aerials have a switch inside for the upper and lower limits. It should go to the max limit then make a clonking noise about 6 times and then stop. Same when it reaches the bottom.

You need a constant feed which powers the aerial downwards. You then need a switched feed (perceivably from the radio- live when the radio is on) or you can have it on ignition/accessories live ( but the aerial will be up whenever the key is on even if the radio is off. )

Alternatively fit a switch for the aerial switched feed.

Or . .. if you have an original switch on the car and want to keep the original dashboard one, wire it through the original ones so that pushing the down gives a feed to to the permanent wire and pushing it up gives a feed to both wires. (energising relays and latching relays are also a possibility)

So the aerial is the original Rolls Royce one. The car has automatic switching of the aerial via the radio switch and a relay that switches one coil or the other in the aerial motor. The problem is, the aerial doesn't turn off in either the top or bottom position. On the Rolls Royce wiring diagram, it shows no way for this to occur. There are no switches shown in the aerial motor.
