Just noticed in the last few days first gear takes a while to engage to second. After that its OK, just seems to be an issue when first driving the car in the morning, anything you think that needs attention perhaps? Silver Shadow SRH19305

Check the oil level Kevin. My old Merc does it though, even when full. Perhaps the box is just getting tired.

change the oil & Filter drop the Gearbox sump pan and clean it
all so remember you need to flush the oil in the Tconverter

Because the TC doesn't automatically drain itself on many cars most people tend to flush the oil a bit at a time. After draining the sump and cleaning the filter you simply replace the sump (with a new gasket) and refill it to the correct level. Now use the car for a day or so and drain it again. Refill and repeat the exercise twice more. By now the %age of fresh to 'old' ATF should be in the order of 20:1 which is as good as 100% for all practical purposes.

As a prophylactic measure you might even want to drain and replace 1 litre of ATF at every oil change. This should mean that the fluid will be newish virtually all the time.

By the way: If you also own a diesel car you can filter the old ATF through an old pair of jeans and chuck it straight into the fuel tank and it will burn at least as well as DERV. Even the latest DI and common rail engines won't notice 10% ATF in the fuel. I've been running on a combination of ATF, used sump oil and filtered waste veg oil in the tanks of my last 3 diesel cars and they've all passed the rigid annual emmissions tests with flying colours.
