having just been told by my mechanic that i need to replace the ignition module on my 76 shadow, i was wondering if it might be cheaper (and time) to switch to electronic ignition.Price quoted by the mechanic was $800.00 (!!)to replace ignition module with a lucas-seems a bit much to me!
Any thoughts or advice?

Hi Lucien,

The choices one has for a Shadow:

a) Lumenition: off the shelf. Inexpensive, at least compared to the original rip off.

b) Crane Cams: good service, ask for XR700. I've understood that prices start in US around 130 USD which is inexpensive.

c) Ignitior (Pertronix) - "off the shelf" too. Quality maker, not the cheapest choice, but reasonable for sure.

d) I also asked MSD, they have the "control box" if you get the innards of the dizzy jiving for it. MSD supplier were stunned in that respect (as all US machinery suppliers usually are beyond GM/DC/FORD).

e) I've heard of "Piranna" or something similar but could not find it here on the local market.

There could be more of course.

Shadows are much "easier" to convert to breakerless systems than SS IIs! You just "takes your choise and pays your money"...

See also the latest posting on the Swammelstein page under the heading "Dizzy Saga".

Good luck!

Dirty Harry

Harry:
I have a 1977 SSII, which has a Lucas Opus distributer.
Are you saying that the Lumenition will work better?

Dear Mr Khan, I beleive that the previous poster (Harry)has summed up perfectly. If you have the "Optus" unit then that is original and expensive to replace relative to other alternatives. Not being an "Einstein" I am unable to say which is "better" and prefer to rely on experience from the field as based upon happenings in the real world. To that end I note that many R-R specialists (qualified) routinely fit "Lumenition" to SS11s,but of course that does not necessarily translate to "better" etc, but in terms of value for money/practicality etc, so many peole cannot be wrong. As I have noted in other posts addressing this question, I personally prefer the "Pertronix" (fitted to my 1970 SS1) but to my knowledge the unit is not (yet) available for the later SS11.

Greetings!
Well, I got the pertronix unit from albers, and my mechanic fit it right into the distributor"dizzy" with no hassle.
this after learning that the "original" ignition module is now costing around $800.!
