Hello everyone, new owner and first post here. I have a 1956 Bentley S1, Standard Steel. Having recently purchased it, I have had it serviced with a few small jobs done. Which included engine mount, prop centre bearing. I now have a vibration going through the car at about 2,000 rpm. I think the fresh engine mounts have shown it up - that it was being missed previously. However this could be a red herring. This occurs at a standstill in neutral and also when driving along. In fourth at around 55 MPH. You can accelerate out of it and it stops. To describe the feeling, it is like a misfire - however I don't think it is. It has fresh high octane fuel, fresh spark plugs, plus someone had previously fitted pertronix ignition kit and plug leads. It also feels like it could be crank whip - however I did not think the S1 suffered from that as much as the MKVI. Would someone confirm whether the Torus on the gearbox could cause this vibration? Even when at a standstill and increasing the rpm on the engine. As I am unsure if the Torus turns when stationary. Any advice or where I should start diagnosing would be much appreciated. Many thanks |

Hi Oliver, welcome. Crank damper? disclaimer. I'm no mechanic, rather an interested hack who is lucky enough to own an S. I don't know much about them but there are some friction discs and springs in there that can probably wear. |

Oliver Welcome, hope you enjoy the car, post a photo of the car when you can and the Chassis number. Afraid I can't suggest too much in regard to the vibration, however here is a diagram of the gearbox taurus at neutral, you asked if the Taurus rotates, as per the diagram the rear taurus idles without driving the output mainshaft. Regards David

That is super advice, thank you both. Having read the RR Technical workshop manual - Jason it seems you were spot on. It is the crankshaft damper. It states in the workshop manual that if the car has sat for a long period it can cause an issue with the damper. At 2,500 rpm and between 50-55mph. So I have emailed a specialist about the cost of renewing the damper. Many thanks for your advice. |

Well at least the rad can come out with out having to take the whole front of the car apart. That advise is usually for the 4.25 litre crank, the 4.5/4.9 lite crank doesn't give vibration problems until around 70+ MPH with a faulty damper. So I've read, still could be a problem though. To prevent this from happening again, holes are drilled around the perimeter of the damper to allow the flow on new oil in (see articles) Get an adapter for a modern spin-on oil filter. I use a WIX filter for synthetic oil and synthetic oil. Keep the car in a heated garage as well. https://www.kda132.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Dampers-Springs-Drives-Camshafts-1.pdf https://www.kda132.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Dampers-Springs-Drives-Camshafts-2.pdf |

Here are some photos of my damper after 21,000 miles on it. Nice and clean with original cotton duck washers.

oh wow, I can always rely on you Jeff to produce the detail, and I'm excited I have to make more stuff. I made this yesterday to tighten the "special" left hand nut on the diff pinion. I see reading the first link a similar tool is required for the damper. Not sure why a standard nut with folding lock tab wasn't chosen, but that's RR-B I guess. |

Jeff, did you slot yours as well, or just drill. Any signs of issues from the Taurus, see it needs to be full of oil and no air. |
