Can anyone shed some light on how to remove the damper assembly from the front of the crankshaft. I have read the manual, and it says use a specialist extractor....I am in the process of the engine rebuild, have placed the crank and pistons back into the block and now need to deal with some play inside the damper assembly, probably the castellated nut inside has loosened. I will be replacing old felt discs with Teflon as supplied from Flying Spares |

I know Kelly Opfar was making the tool for removing the castellated nut at a very fair price (look elsewhere in the forum). I read an article on a comparison of many different damper materials some time back. The original was cotton I think, not felt, and I don't recall teflon as being the preferred replacement. As I have recently discovered, just because Flying Spares sells something, doesn't necessarily mean it provides an optimal outcome. I'll see if I can find the article. Do I assume correctly that this is for the 6 cylinder engine? |

Nathan I suggest you URGENTLY read the articles on crankshaft dampers on www.kda132.com. You had better pray that the serrated nut has not come loose but it is doubtful. If you have indeed bolted the crankshaft into the block it is more vital to read and understand those articles quickly.

Thanks Norman, I have read the articles and the exploded diagrams were very helpful. After some trial and error, and my father thinking through what was needed to extract it, we managed to get the bush and cover removed by using a small socket inside the outer nut, pushing against the crank. This allowed the bush to come away from the crank and the "sludge" was evident as stated in the articles. The castellated nut itself was not loose, so the play has to be inside the dampener unit. Will post some photos for reference |
