Hi All, I wonder if anyone can help? I need the n/s kingpin replacing or repairing on my 1948 standard steel, there is excessive play in it. Can anyone recommend someone who can do this job? I wondered if it was possible to take the whole unit off and send it away for repair. The other possible option, is there someone who has an old unit I could buy? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Mark |

Mark if you can contemplate taking 'the unit' off you can certainly repair it. The only trouble you may get into is extracting the king pin. I had a puller made up which was simply an inverted cup with a bolt in it. Having taken the stub axle assembly off you remove the brakes and backing plate and the cover below the king pin. You place the 'cup' over the king pin and screw the bolt into the tapped hole in the bottom of the pin. Tightening the bolt will pull out the pin. If it is stuck a little heat from a butane torch should change its mind! The king pin by the way unlike other cars runs in needle roller bearings. You can replace these with your very own pinkies no special tools required. All the bits are very expensive but for our sakes resist any suggestions that you bush the thing up in bronze otherwise you may find lightening strikes coming very close to your abode!! Seriously they are a beautiful bit of kit and should be preserved. It follows of course that you are going to flush out the one shot system to ensure that the new king pin and its lovely bearings are swimming in pools of EP 90 oil and that you will be remembered for months later by people you visit with the car and on whose drive you will micturate this wonderful balm! |

Hi Mark, Replacing the bushes in the stub axle and replacing the pin may be only half the problem, the axle eye may need attention as well. If you are not going to do it yourself, ( a big job, don't think I would try it myself), I would take the whole car to whoever you choose to do the work. I have had a bit of a go replacing king pins and bushes myself, but with the help of a mate who knew which end of the reamer to hold onto! Cheers Marty

Thank you for your replies. My main problem is time! The vehicle is a wedding car and cant be off the road too long. I thought if I took the old unit off I could just send it away to be fixed whilst I was in work. I only get a few hours at the weekend to do any repairs and I can see this job getting very involved and possibly having some problems. I don't own reamers, pullers and the like so thought I would leave it to someone who has experience with these kingpins. Any suggestions of people here in the UK who could help would be appreciated. Thanks Mark |
