Need advice on how to get the drum off of 1948 Bentley MKVI with a frozen brake adjuster. I was setting the brakes and had turned the adjuster tight and went to back it off and it was very stiff with no feeling of the clicks. Brakes would not loosen, adjuster appears to be frozen/jammed. Any ideas on how to free it up and also get the drum off?

The first thing is to stop attempting to turn the adjuster. I would squirt some penetrating oil past the adjuster into the mechanism which may free it up after a couple of days. Before you attempt to turn the adjuster again tap the back of it lightly preferably with a thin piece of wood between the hammer and the adjuster. Next, try wiggling the adjuster backwards and forwards gently.
You can now try to apply some torque to the adjuster and with a bit of luck it should now be free. Assuming it does release, follow the instructions in the maintenance manual for lubricating the mechanism and while you are about it lubricate the other three adjustment mechanisms to avoid a repetition. |
