New to this forum but have looked at it for advice over the years. My Mk 6 has developed a misfire which seems to be on numbers 3 & 6 in that pulling the leads off these two does not affect it. There is a spark however. I suspect it may be the distributor cap as 3&6 are next to each other but this would be annoying as the cap is not very old and the are not cheap! Any ideas/advice | ||

Pull the wires up on the distributor and check to see the steel spikes are not corroded and they are making good contact with the wire. I'm assuming that your running solid copper wires. Resistor wires don't play well with the spikes. What brand of plugs are you running and are they resistor type ? Are you still running the original rotor with the resistor built in, if you are, you need to go to non-resistor plugs. Spark should be bright blue to white, not orange. What kind of spark plug caps are you running, DYI or store bought. | ||

The spikes are fine. The leads are fairly recent as are the plugs as I redid them all at the same time and the rotor arm is new too. The leads were the recommended ones from introcar (all pre-assembled) I think but maybe not copper | ||

You're not answering my questions. We'll start with the rotor, did you get the one with the resistor built in, that would have cost 159.29 Aussie dollars, or the other with the suppressor for 35.98 ? This is the only wire set that I could find that they offer, is this what you have ? https://www.introcar.com/products/HTLEADS1-X If you look at the ends of each lead where it's been cut, you can clearly see if its copper wire or resistor wire. Which is it ? They list many plugs, does the set you have, have an "R" in the manufacturers part number on the plug ? If so, that is a resistor plug. You can't run resistor plugs, resistor wires and the suppressor all at the same time, you can only have one. Plugs, wires, or the suppressor. Are you still running the 70 year old Lucas coil ? When was the last time the points have been changed and gapped ? I'll ask Introcar in the mean time if that plug lead set is solid copper, sometimes they don't even know themselves, and even if they are looking right at them, they still don't know. Sure expensive though, you could have easily made your own set from your local auto parts store at a fraction of the cost, same with the plugs too...and the points. I haven't bought any points for my car in a while, so I will look up the number for some after market ones. That Delco duel point distributor was used in other things like fire trucks and farm equipment. |
