1951 Mark VI Standard Body Bentley.

Does anyone know what the correct thickness of felt that RR used on the floor that the carpet sits on ?

Mine was never there, just some cheap rubber underlay and house carpet.

I asked Woolies, and they did not know.

If someone could measure what's in their car by pulling the carpet back a bit, or a photo would be very helpful.

Jeff,
I have measured an uncompressed area of felt floor lining on B88HR and the felt thickness is 2mm. It is glued to the floor boards. This is totally original material as the car has never been restored. There is a supplier in the UK, Auto Lounge Textiles in Rickmansworth who specialise in classic car interior fabrics. The felt roll is 90cm wide and can be supplied in any length.
Their e mail is sales@autoloungetextiles.co.uk. I hope that this assists you.

Martin,s car is a coach built one. The standard steel cars have felt as thick as the "Dot" fix, carpet securing studs are tall.
That is about 1/4".

Thanks for the clarification Chris and apologies to Jeff. I missed the SS reference. I believe that Auto Lounge supply different felt thicknesses so it could still be worth contacting them.

Christopher, so the felt on a Standard Body is a 1/4 inch thick, that seems extreme ?
At that thickness the felt would be seen at the edge of the doors.
Maybe the skid plate is screwed on top of the felt, that would solve that problem.

Jeff,

You are probably right at 1/8", the carpets were all thick woven pile with leather bound edges, and the thin black felt was in quite small sections under the middle areas under the carpet.

The felt against the back of the pedals and against the bulkhead was much thicker.

I'm normally obsessed with authentic and original, but for this, I'm thinking a modern material could be better than the original felt. If it was my car, I would be thinking about what has the maximim thermal insulation value. Lots of heat gets into the people space via the floor, especially on the left side.

Oops; sorry. It's approaching summer where I live, and I'm focused on staying cool. Your perspective may be different from mine.

It gets plenty hot here on the B.C. Coast, we had a few days just above 40 last summer, and then it cooled down to 32 _ not really that cool.

I was thinking about Dynamat, and then using a very thin felt on top of that to make it look original.

It's just a heavy duty bubble packaging material from what I can tell, so it would insulate and make things quiet, so it would seem.
The air pockets should do a good job.

Here's another product that looks like it will do the same thing, but much less expensive.
