Whatever any one has to say, do not use the standard 25 mm ones with spacers, it is just a "bodge"! The double ball type requires a lot of machining on a large lathe and weakens the brake mounting plate.

Christopher Carnley has forwarded the images below and associated comment for me to post on his behalf: "Would you include the following pictures on the wheel bearing thread please? The "fretting" of the wheel bearing and collar journal is not due to either failed case hardening, metal spraying or hard chroming. It occurs mostly on the long shaft, and particularly on the Silver Wraith variant, and more so on the early A and B Series chassis. According to recently quoted Chinese theoretical research, it does not occur! It is due to a combination of compressive stress corrosion and lack of torsional stiffness. The badly worn original bearing is one of a pair that came from a Silver Dawn about 3 years ago. The car had been bought from father and son "specialists" and owned by them for 40 years." . |

I have carried out Norman's double row bearing modification on my Silver Cloud 3 with no problems at all. I did not know that this could also be done on the Silver Wraith or R type! |

I carried out Norman Geeson's update on 1948 Bentley MK6 ; it has worked beautifully. Before replacement there was no bearing/axle wear as shown by Christoper Carney's photos; B359CD
