Hi all GYD15 has not had new tyres for man years and the time has come. She has Dunlop wire wheels 19 inch x 4.5 inch as indicated on the 1936 Sales Card. Noting that she does get driven every 10 days or so, is there a decent (not too noisy) all rounder tyre that I should look for? Any ideas or issues I should be considering when purchasing tyres? Many thanks in advance |

Hi Theo. I fitted similar Dunlop’s to my 1925 Chevrolet Superior K about 4 years ago. They have been perfect. These were from Antique Tyres in Victoria. Shipped direct to me with 4 new tubes. Just change them like doing a large bicycle tyre.

I have done quite some research on tyres suitable for 20/25 HP cars and came to the decision that the best choice are Excelsior Stahl Sport. Dunlop 6.00 x 19 are dangerously low on load capacity for our cars, so I was forced 18 years ago to fit 6.50 /7.00x19 Dunlop Fort tyres when the Excelsiors were not yet available. These are too big, scraping on full lock on the front wings. They are considerably heavier than the Excelsiors. I have no connection with Excelsior except as a satisfied customer.

Hi Theo. Dunlop do a few different rated tyres like this. Antique tyres can confirm the correct load rating you need. Ask for Mitchell if you call them. |

Thanks Patrick, I managed to speak to Mitch who was very helpful. Looks like the tyres are a 600/19 which unsurprisingly are out of stock Mitch suggested that the only manufacturers of this size are Firestone. Not sure if there are any other leads out there. I'll keep hunting. |

A friend of mine fitted these Firestone to his 1929 Chevrolet Theo. I felt they are a better tyre than the Dunlop, however I had already fitted mine. You can’t go wrong with them. |

Anytime Theo. This type of tyre is hard to get in any brand. I did really like the walls and tread pattern of the Firestone very much. It suited the car very well. |

Update & further thoughts please... No Firestones in the country right now. I'm not in a rush but have found a set of Lucas 650/19's that are in stock and available. They are priced more competitively than the Firestone. Does anyone have thoughts on the Lucas tyre? Thanks in advance |

Hi Theo, My first check would be the age of the tyre since manufacture. This information is in the form of a code on the tyre sidewall as covered in the following link. https://www.tyrereview.com.au/tyre-advice/how-to-tell-exactly-when-a-tyre-was-manufactured

Lucas Tyres are recommended by Longstone Tyres, here in the U.K.

Thanks for all the advice and assistance so far. Armed with David’s date decoder I got exactly nowhere ! The supplier tells me that the tyres don’t have a date code ….”it’s not required by the US law or ours for vintage tyres - radial yes but not cross ply - some like Lester do but the big guys Coker & Lucas don't’ Apparently this design was introduced no more than 2 years old. Any dissenting voices? Many thanks |

Hello Theo I am not familiar with the current laws relating to this, here or the U.S., however I have purchased within the last couple of months, 4 Firestone Cross Ply Tyres 6.50 x 16 for a MKV Jaguar, manufactured in and shipped from the U.S. and supplied by a Melbourne supplier, the tyres have a date stamp from June 2021. Regards David |

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I'm going to jump in. I'll catch you as I wobble down the road I'll pop a photo up when they are fitted. |

Hi Theo, Interesting claim re the cross-ply tyres being exempt from displaying date codes. Apart from cross ply instead of radial ply construction, the rest of the construction is effectively the same in both types so there is no reason why a date code should not have been included on the sidewalls to comply with this requirement. It might be worthwhile checking with the ADR Authority whether the dealer's claim regarding cross-ply tyres is correct. I would be very interested in our international contributors could check and advise if this exemption applies in their countries. . |
