Well putting aside the brutal fact that almost every week here the police fatally shoot a mentally ill person, and then get exonerated, if you have any doubts about this question the have a peek at the very brutal assault by a policeman in a police cell of a 16 year old girl on the ABC News website. But be warned - it pretty sickening. He slammed her back into the cell with crazy force then tried to hit her and then sat on her. Unbelievably, the magistrate ruled that no conviction be recorded! So apart from him being fined $2,500 for the assault he gets to keep his gun and continue being a cop. Cops do have to deal with a fair bit of nastiness here from the public, that I understand but this cop is nothing but a bully. I have had to deal with cops in Russia, USA, Indonesia and Philippines and the worst ones by far I found to be in Australia.The most polite police I ever met were in Florida, Maryland, Virginia and especially Manhattan New York. I went through four years of law school with a female police Sergeant and one day she told me she was scared the WA Police were going to knock her off. Fortunately she left the police force and went on to a higher office. Quite a few decades ago a deranged man walked into and out of Perth Police headquarters with a rifle. When this guy was executed outside by the police well over a hundred bullets were dug out of the wall behind him. A previous lady barrister who was once my boss called it "Death By Cop" at the following Coroners Inquiry. I agree with a specialist criminal barrister who informed me that he holds the opinion that Australian Police should not be walking the streets with loaded guns. Our Army here vets incoming Officers with a psychologist Officer. Perhaps that a solution to cut down on bullies entering our police force. Also, I have noticed that all mental facilities appears to be removed at the Police Academies and replaced with bureaucratic stupidity for reasons I have never understood. I have noticed that over the past 50 years the Police Forces in Australia have become increasingly military looking and that is something that concerns me and does not comfort me at all. Still in my town there are no police and I and everybody else in town is pretty happy about that. | ||

The scariest place I lived was Spain. If you are a foreigner there is a target painted on you to be put in prison. They make millions of Euros off foreigners. 90 euros a day (from the EU) off of foreigners, so Spain has every incentive in the world to put you into one of their prisons. Every Judge is corrupt, hand picked from a corrupt King (son of King Juan Carlos who was put into power by the Dictator Francisco Franco after ousting King Alfonso XIII ). Everyone knows in Spain that your verdict depends on how much money you possess. The only good thing that came from living in Spain was I studied math and law both of which I have mostly forgotten. In Honduras the police are indistinguishable from the military, but luckily they are corrupt or I would have been in a nasty situation with the only red light on the main road in Tegucigalpa. | ||

Gosh Mike thanks for the info on a Spain. I shall cross Spain off my list. My biological male parent who spent most of my childhood locked up in third world jails from craziness like threatening a guy with a loaded handgun in a Manila nightclub under Marcos's Martial Law to stealing a bottle of whisky and a pattaya in Bangkok etc etc told me he really enjoyed Spain but then he also thought Philippines was a paradise whereas I think its a human hellhole to be avoided. What about Portugal? | ||

Thats quite a story Vlad. Ive enjoyed many of your stories. Youve taken 2 or 3 examples of about 30,000 police - 2 or 3 times that number over the years you talk about - and typically lumped all police into the same bucket. Thats easy writing and lacks consideration. Youre a lawyer i beleive - i would have expected a bit more thought before such a generalist post. So, put on a uniform, come work a few shifts on the pointy end away from your comfortable chair, and then come and tell me your horror stories, because while you think you know I can tell you I have lived them. Until then shake your fist at 'the system' and 'society' and bash away at your keyboard. With all your lawyer friends, regail us with your view of the utopian society. You dont have to like the police - not 1 policeman i have ever met expects everyone to like them. Police have broad shoulders, and know that they get burdened with the shitty decisions made by other police on the other side of the country. Beleive it or not, the police are probably the reason there are no police in your town. And when you need them next, tell them youd prefer to not have their help for fear of being executed. | ||

Trust me Glen, I don't need the police and never will do. I firmly believe that the Australian Police Forces attract a bully element. I have witnessed police perjure themselves continuously over many years and they can be extremely over officious to totally brutal. And I certainly believe they are over protected by the judiciary. I have met some police with commonsense but they were rare. I doubt my observations are a coincidence and as I said Australian Police are the worst to deal with out of all the countries I have lived in. They should not be armed that's for sure! | ||

I lived a lot of years in Pattaya Thailand, it is 70 miles south of Bangkok. Smaller city, nicer people, night life if you are into that, less traffic, no smog, and in general you don't have to look out for traffic and look both ways of the sidewalk before leaving a shop like in Bangkok. The sidewalks are passing lanes for cycles. Don't know anything about Portugal except the language spoken in Barcelona Spain (Catalan) is closer to Portuguese than Spanish. And everyone told me learn Spanish or learn Catalan the next person I tried to talk to. Yeah sure learn two languages because some ex-hillbillies come out of the mountains and started a city/country depending who you talk to. Like English is not hard enough for me. If you speak Spanish you can kind of have a conversation with those from Portugal (or Brazil). |
