https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI57QHL6ge0

If you see this in one of the videos you have seen the most dangerous being on Earth.

Actually that link works. The Russian Band is Called Slot and the song is 2Wars.

The Stones song is Midnight Rambler in Madison Square Garden but then you have Sympathy for the Devil at Alamont California.

And Really I have to Put top 12 Songs because
WunderLustKing by Gogol Bordello and who can get past Doors playing Road House Blues 1970 in NY. The video shows cops everywhere and Morrison catching a thrown necklace perfectly with his neck while performing.

Ah I could go on.

Music is a Drug.

Mike,

The real cause of Bon Scott's death reportedly involved more than alcohol poisoning however for various reasons, it has been claimed the autopsy cause of death may not have been accurately identified and reported.

If you want to hear a raw, rough and very talented singer, listen to anything by Jimmy Barnes who is an Australian Living Legend [Vladimir included one of his songs in his list]. His life story is inspirational considering what he experienced growing up and in his later adult life.

If Vladimir and Jimmy Barnes were to ever meet, I for one would want to be there.................

Try this and see how you feel:

This is scary.... Not only do we like the same cars... we also like the same music.... And we dont even know each other. Except I have always known that Vlad is my sister from another mother.

Hey Vlad - what about this visit that you have threatened over the last few years? I still have a jacket to pass onto you... why dont you come and pick it up in person?

Mike,

Not sure about the Coke usage - I am not one who takes notice of media advertisements as I have a very effective "switch off and ignore" attitude to advertisements invariably trying to sell me something I don't want and/or don't need.

Bon Scott was reported to have died by choking on his own vomit after his usual drinking bout. My exwifes brother worked with his father in Western Australia. A very big loss indeed.

How much you need to drink to die depends a lot on who you are ie your physical make up. Some people cannot drink a bottle of Vodka and survive and some can.

So did Jimi Hendrix but google says Barbiturate overdose, Janis Joplin Heroin overdose, Elvis Presley Heart attack, Bon Scott Asphyxia.

Search under: what did "name" die of

No one is posting their song 10 list so I and others can experience other music possibly never heard before. Like Mongolian Rock in the next selection of Vlad's Russian song. A two string Rock band. I'm sure "some" of my stuff most have never heard before.

Mike is right Omar. Where is some super fast Middle Eastern Thrash. We know you have it because I heard it once working my way through Uni when I was a minder for Strippers.

We had to do a show at a doctors and nurses party and it was wild....and crazy. And one nurse was dressed as a TWA jet while a doctor was spinning around on the floor like a deranged bumblebee in full Arabic dress.

Produce the goods Omar!

Omar sometimes you worry me.

There is only one person, okay two,
Who are entitled to wear THE JACKET.

You bloody well know having mixed with Elizabeth R and flogged her Corgis with a Polo Stick and dropped the word Camargue....I need not go on Omar.

Omar we know what country you don't live in and we can croak the rest of them.

Yes in Brisbane Airport you can buy alcohol 24/7 but you cannot buy a lottery ticket for all kinds of reasons Omar that simply do not concern wild animals er for example THE RICH.

YES OMAR YEEHAH I is coming to Dubia enroute, thats French to you, back to Russia to slap Billionaire Hobos across the face with wet and poisonous fish.

Its a Camargue thing Omar you just would not understand.

Ross if you are going down that road not sure you are old enough to remember this song:

George Clinton - Atomic Dog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuyS9M8T03A

Hanson - Weird
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32nlxQOe3tw

Manudo - Cannon Ball (Talk about Disco, not sure people up north ever heard of them. They were a Mexican group. Most songs were Spanish.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s05LvnUdT2o

Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fe93CLbHjxQ

To the song Macarena physicist put the words:
You start with the brane
and the brane is B.P.S
Then you go near the brane
And the space is A.D.S.
Who knows what it means?
I don't, I confess.
Ehhhh! Maldacena!
Super Yang-Mills
With Very large N
Gravity on a sphere
Flux without end
Who says they're the same?
Holographic, he contends.
Ehhh Maldacena!"

About Juan Maldacena who discovered a reliable realization of the holographic principle – namely the AdS/CFT correspondence. Holographic principle is that the description of a volume of space can be thought of as encoded on a lower-dimensional boundary to the region—such as a light-like boundary as a gravitational horizon (such as a black hole event horizon or the universe.)

When I was younger I went to LA to become a rock star. At that time I was pretty good at the guitar. So I went on cattle calls (try outs, interview) you show up with your amp and guitar to play for them. At one they handed me a tape and said learn these songs and come back in a week to play. This was for REO Speedwagon. The guitar player broke his arm and could not play so they needed a back up. I came back for the second cattle call and played and was picked as one of the top three. Then a week later we three came back to play for the manager. After, he came up to me and said you're good. Now you know first thing you will be put in front of upwards of 20,000 people can you handle that? ... I thought, and realized I had not thought of that before. I was focused on obtaining the goal, not what happens afterward. The actually standing in front of 20,000 people all expecting a good show and you cannot freeze. There cannot be a back up for the back up. I told him man, I had not even thought of that. Now he is not going to trust someone that is not 100% sure they can do it. So that ended that career. Step two go into physics. Step three etc. etc. etc. Ends, truck driver restoring cars.

My favourite Rolls-Royce song is a "no-brainer"------

It is "Moonlight Shadow" by Mike Oldfield and sung by Maggie Reilly. Every time I play it, memories come flooding back of top-down moonlit night drives in country NSW in DRH14434.

Original version:

Remastered Version:

Best played full volume on a high quality sound system to appreciate fully.

Okay, I'll play but as I have over 3300 albums (42000+ tracks that would take 18 weeks to play all the way through non-stop) picking a 'Top Ten' is a ridiculous ask.

Here are twelve tracks that came to mind in an hour of sitting in front of the computer. They're not in any order and if I had to repeat the exercise a week from now I'd almost certainly not come up with the same list. All of them are nonetheless songs that have impressed me and which I shall never tire of hearing.

Clubbed To Death - Rob D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2bX2UkQpRI

My Favourite Game - The Cardigans
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ll5y2hZdCI

To Build A Home - The Cinematic Orchestra

I've Got a Plan - My Friend The Chocolate Cake

Elevator Operator - Courtney Barnett

Throw Your Arms Around Me - Hunters & Collectors
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J00HIvc_vAE

Rise - Eddie Vedder

The Mercy Seat - Johnny Cash

Some Of Them Are Old - Brian Eno

David

Moonlight Shadow" by Mike Oldfield

Video unavailable
The uploader has not made this video available in your country.

Chris

On your list I have only heard of 3 bands

Johnny Cash
Yes
Cat Stevens

I'll have to check them out when my internet decides to work.

The only Yes we all listened to were on the radio, along with Rush, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Lead Zeppelin, Boston, Kansas, and Uriah Heap.
This Yes was later when they got into jazz. Never heard it.

Mmmmmmm - both Youtube links are playable in Australia so must be a US/internet service provider decision.

This should work for everyone:

video/mp4Moonlight Shadow
Moonlight Shadow (Remastered).mp4 (4503.9 k)

Just download this file, change the .unk to .mp4. and play.

David,

Copyright laws are weird, all one has to do in the USA now is to say it is copyrighted and it is. When I was younger you had to send off to the government your stuff and a form and some money to get a copyright. Where he may personally post his own material may break certain countries law. He made the song but probably does not own the copyright to it.

Commercial broadcast sound sources were pioneered by some pretty amazing people:

Raymond Scott ran 'Manhattan Research Inc.'. He also composed the Powerhouse tune, which anyone who ever watched Warner Bros cartoons will immediately recognise.

Brian Eno provided 'Textures' to commercial broadcasters. He also created the Windows 95 Startup Sound (on a Mac!).

Chris and Mike,

I will have to wait till next week to view the links above as I am restricted to mobile broadband until I get home and I am rapidly approaching my limit for this month.

Thanks for the links plus the others above which will be very interesting for me.

Mike:

All things being equal, Australian copyright laws are quite fair and reasonable especially for older material that is in the public domain. The following attachment relates to our current copyright laws. Please note the recent US-Australia Free Trade Agreement saw US law become Australian law thanks to our politicians not having the guts to stand up for our laws and our rights as a supposedly independent nation:

application/pdfcopyright
Duration of Copyright (G023v19).pdf (747.1 k)

I found this really useful in a recent discussion with the Australian Film and Sound Archives over a 1935 VicRail steam train documentary posted by a closed user group member that was summarily removed by Facebook for alleged "copyright infringement" and which was subsequently proved to be eligible as a consequence of it being in the "public domain" from compliance with Australian copyright law.

David,

I am back in the USA only because the USA has so much influence over the world. Each country is either on the dole to the USA or scared of it. They bow to the USA whims and lunacies as the servant to the master. As the world moves ever more closer to the inevitable tyranny that results from sheep following the herd, and power hungry sycophants to the church and ideology. Alexis de Tocqueville observed the potential dangers of The Tyranny of the Majority. (Only less than 50% of Americans vote and it is these minorities who decide who will lead.) De Tocqueville wrote:

"I know no country," he wrote, "in which, generally speaking, there is less independence of mind and true freedom of discussion than in America." He added that the lack of great writers in the United States was due to the absence of "freedom of spirit" brought on by a majority intolerant of minority views.

"If ever freedom is lost in America," de Tocqueville warned, "that will be due to the ... majority driving minorities to desperation...." De Tocqueville did identify certain elements at work in American democracy which checked the formation of a tyranny of the majority. Among these elements were the large number of independent associations, the press and the courts.

In Europe, most critics of democracy believed that America would sooner or later descend into anarchy. De Tocqueville, however, saw another even more disturbing threat to American democracy. He feared that American citizens would become so satisfied with being equal to one another that they would abandon their deep interest and involvement in self-government. If this should happen, cautioned de Tocqueville, government would grow more powerful and in a kindly sort of way cover society with "a network of petty, complicated rules." Far from dissolving into anarchy, American government under these conditions could become as oppressive as any cruel European monarchy. Americans would end up having equality through slavery.

I see Alexis de Tocqueville's words very prophetic from his view in 1830s. Sad the sheep follow the heard like lemmings over the cliffs. As this experiment in Democracy leads to FEMA camps (Federal Emergency Management Agency government agency tasked with the effective management of major emergencies within the country) are being built to house all those that may pose a threat to the opposition of the tyranny of the majority.

I have just been given proof by this thread that I really must have severe brain damage from all of my wild hedonistic partying, car accidents and punch ups.....and I feel totally embarrassed that I forgot to mention:

JANIS JOPLIN

Whose voice and stage presence was explosive.

I don't think she ever had a song I got bored with and of course I always found her voice to be exceptionally erotic if not pornographic.

Appreciation of music is perhaps a subjective matter just like cars.

Mike has a bloody good idea here but what are you ten most favoured songs dilutes what we really need.

I hate boring music. Do not give me jingle bells...... every year I promise myself to jet to an Islamic country where I will not have to listen to it anymore.

I think Mike should have started the thread as : What kind of music do you like because I put my two cents in and now I feel guilty about not including some other artists that have given me much pleasure.

So I now add three to my list.

Edif Piaf (anything she sang)
Gogol Bordello (just about the whole lot)
Rage Against the Machine

String Without Mass

And my favorite by John D. Boswell of melodysheep who told me how he does this and what software he uses. Check out his channel for more amazing videos he made, link at bottom.

I'm glad someone got my double entendre.

I'm starting to see why you had a crush on Annette Funicello, wasn't so Mickey Mouse after all. :-)

Mike sorry forgot to mention.(menshone) just how does ti equal sh sound? Bloody English language is so unbelievably illogical?

English should be banned worldwide!

But in any case presently studying Sleep Now in the Fire by Rage Against the Machine.

Gibson chinky electric guitar arriving this week with a PA System so loud that my music mate advises that if I crank it in my shed I will deafen myself. Good I replied that may mean I am ready for another relationship because I won't be able to hear her complaining.

This morning using Sodium Metabisulphite to sterilize another 120 half litres bottles for home brew I almost passed out and then I noticed a wooden arm from one of my lounge suites had disintegrated 5 nites ago but I had not noticed but I had remembered throwing an entire stereo system from the third floor of a house I shared in Sydney with a women in 2005 because it refused to play Whole Lot of Rosie by ACDC when I needed it.

Which is precisely why I need to book a flight back to Manila to find two young stunning Pinays to sing lead in THE BAND.

Benjamin Franklin tried to reform the spelling of the English language. Of course like the snobs in Spain who have ban all Spanish words that do not come from their sacred text, this change was never allowed by the elite class. Being dyslexic every other word is underlined in red. And my little antique Franklin speller has been hit by one too many cosmic rays and has ceased to function altogether, so now I have to google the words.

Long story, but the reason I am not a professor of physics is the English language. I feel your pain.

Favourite music is usually a song that has a particular meaning or fixes an event in your mind
For me they go like this

1) Rocelli Kaharunta by Jeannie Lewis
First time a song mesmorised me, Physics theatre UNSW final song of Childheads Doll. EMI basterdized it by deepening her pure soparino voice on the recording (looking backwars to tomorrow.

2) Do You Feel Like I do ,Peter Frampton
On an 8 track continually playing in a Kombi on a filthy raining night all the way Mullimbimbi and yes there was some weed being smoked.

3) Utopia - Todd Rudgren
High rotation at a party where I first tried acid

4) Triple Echo - The Soft Machine, whole triple album.
Music I studied to

5) You Are What You Is / Dumb All Over - Frank Zappa
Fairly well summarizes my philosophy on life

6) In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Graduation parties from high school

7) Surfing With the Alien - Joe Satriani
Time with a deer friend who dies way too young

8) No Pussyfooting - Fripp & Eno
The first years of living away from home in a variety of share houses

9) No More War - Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs
A band from my youth and a song that commerated the end of Vietnam

10) Mugs Game - Dave Warner From the Suburbs
My social life till I settled down with SHMBO

11) Ebony Quill - Galapogus Duck
Resident band at the old Basement, so many summer nights full of great jazz in the smoke filled rooms that used to flood when the king tides rolled in.

Way too many to list the lot.
When I moved into the first share house there were 6 people & 6 copies of Bo Hassens - Lord of the Rings
So that music takes me back to Homosexuality protest, clashes with the Festival of Light, long nights of deep philosiphical conversations.
The next house had 4 copies of Shut Up & Play Yer Guitar - Zappa & 3 copies of Triple Echo - Soft Machine

In those days I had an open reel tape deck so was very popular & built up a vast library of badly recorded music.

Then there is the stuff that pops into your head as a reaction to where you are or what you are doing
I am The Slime - Frank Zappa regularly pops up when rubbish is presented on the TV, Radio or Videos
The sefl professed "experts" sprouting garbage instantly causes Linda Nutters "But No One Would listen" to pop into my head.

It's very simple. The word "GHOTI" is pronounced "FISH".
"gh" -> "f" as in rough.
"o" -> "i" as in women.
"ti" -> "sh" as in station.

Simple.

In the 60's or there abouts I thought Jimi Hendrix (died September 18, 1970, Notting Hill, London, United Kingdom) was the best guitarist to ever live. Example, Voodoo Child

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZBlqcbpmxY

Then Randy Rhoads (died at 25 on March 19, 1982, Leesburg, FL) who was a classically trained guitarist, was a very fine guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne. Example, You Can't Kill Rock and Roll

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGgECvDBDCU

But then came along Joe Satriani with "Always With Me, Always With You" on the Surfing With the Alien album (1987) and that just blew me away, as the best guitar part I had ever heard. It was amazing, I had to learn every note of it, even though I was out of the business by then.

Example, Always With Me, Always With You

Best is a hard thing to define,
look at the gear Hendrix had then look at the gear Satriani had.
Technology makes yesterdays impossible dream tomorrows common place.

The team who invented the Fairlight Synth were a customer of one of my customers as they are now doing backing music for TVC's & movies.
I don't know if you are familiar with it but play any chord from any instrument into it and it will play back the same or modified chord mimicking any instrument or a full orchestra if you want.
Then their next step was to put a reader on is so you can feed it a printed score and it plays back what is on the page, or in their case something that is just different enough to evoke the original in the mind of the listener while being different enough to avoid a copyright violation.
Now compare that to what Moog did 15 years earlier with an instrument that took hours to set up & was near impossible to play the same 3 times.
People for some strange reason like to rank everything rather than appreciating them for what they are. Hendrix is not Framption who is not Zappa who is not Satriani

I was talking about technique not technology, Hendrix being a left handed guitarist with a big thumb to cross all the strings as a bridge, his style is hard to duplicate. Satriani had a lot of new ways to use his finger rather than a pick to double play the frets on a guitar, flicking a string as he released it and so on which at the time was new and very interesting and took a while to figure out how he was doing it, MTV and a Beta recorder helped (If I remember correctly). Randy Rhoads was very good due to his classical training and work with Spanish guitar training using his right hand in concert with his left to sound like more than one instrument at a time.
