Pat,

I suspect this is a sun-enhanced air temperature reading whereas the official temperatures are from a fully shaded and well-ventilated standard enclosure which are always less than that recorded by a thermometer/thermocouple in an unshaded location.

David, this was taken from the data on the sat nav screen with the car traveling on about January 16th.
BTW the outside sensor is fitted in the bottom of the o/s rear view mirror.

Pat, this explains the high reading due to the "glasshouse" effect from the mirror housing.

For comparison, the temperature at Marble Bar in North-West Australia was officially recorded as 49.3deg C in recent days. Having visited this place in summer in 1980, I can vouch it is at least 10 Celsius degrees and most likely 15+ Celsius degrees hotter than Sydenham/St Peters in Sydney which is the location shown on the Sat Nav. This location is close to Botany Bay and the cooling effect of the sea breezes from the nearby ocean/bay waters is present in this location except when the prevailing wind is from the North-West.
