Took the Porsche 968 out for MOT after years of storage this is the 6 speed manual. I have a auto one that I use more often. Passed Ok with a note on the old tyres. On the way back home the odometer stopped working. Today dismantled the speedo head and found the tiny little gear had a broken tooth, tried to mend it, no go on that so will get 3D printed one. Clever stuff as the gear diameter is only 6.90mm with 15 teeth. Pic of old brown broke gear  | ||

Hi Patrick, Have you had items 3D printed before? The pot metal disc in my MKVI window regulator has FTW'd (failed to wind). I have tried various repairs but to no avail. I was thinking as it is a fairly simple part it would be a good candidate for being 3D printed in metal. | ||

Mr. Lockyer (we need more Patricks here), I just this week bought a new speedometer gear for my Shadow from this guy on eBay: https://goo.gl/OFwEAB I think he actually specializes in Porsches. Probably easier and cheaper than printing your own. Kelly | ||

Kelly Thanks for that, if I was in the States I would go these folk. https://www.odometergears.com/distributors.php They listed UK supplier but not any more. For myself to get one the carriage would be double the cost of the items. So hope the 3D will be ok, cost to do some it seems are a few pounds. thanks again. | ||

Patrick L, 15 tooth you say. Hmmmm. That looks exactly like the same one in old volvos. As a matter of fact it has the same tooth break. I had one pack up a few years ago. There was a ready market in those as every old volvo needs one. I forget what I paid, but it was low. What printing technology is you service bureau using? | ||

Patrick L, I don't remember replacing the pod just a 15 tooth gear. Of course that was three Volvos ago. No saying if it's the same thing but it looks exactly like the volvo unit. Make sure whatever printing technology you use has the proper mechanical properties. Some printing materials and processes have some quirks. Now that I think about it, I am far more interested in how the 3d part would work out for that job than an injection moulded part would. | ||

Ross they are the 3d printed parts, clever stuff! the parts I have installed in the unit when they came as the memory may not be as good as it used to be. The RR interior trim kept me busy. The unit is now waiting for me to fit, but other commitments are pressing at the mo.   | ||

Update on the 3D gears. Had some time today to fit the speedo cluster all went well with the fitting, road test no go not just on the odometer but the speedo as well. removed the cluster dismantled refit and ran the rear wheels up, nothing! removed and decided to remove the gears and run the unit so the MPH clock part should work as it did originally. Ran the rear wheels up nothing. Ah Beetle days the speedo is ran from the n/s wheel hub. Rang my son "Father the modern sensor for electronic speedo may be off the abs or steering angle sensor but no way on the transmission. Put it all back to-gether and drove the car only to find the unit worked but only intermittently Took it all apart and found the stepper motor fixing needed to be set on a low torque other wise it would not run free. The 3D gears are the way to IMO for parts not available anymore.  | ||

Had to do the same thing to a Mercedes-Benz to get the odometer back working. The new gear was a different type of plastic with supposedly longer expected life. Little plastic thingys deep down inside can cost a fortune to repair because of the difficulty to get to some of them; as in this Mercedes, a plastic bit in the evaporator housing with about 10 hours of labor to get to. Part is about $4 US. Wish they would not do that. |
