Ok Fellas - this is going to be fun.
how about we all get together and have a laugh for a weekend.
Amsterdam has been chosen because its best to weed out the other places..... hahahaha.
However - to make the event more possible - we could consider the UK as an alternative venue.
For now let us focus on dates although discussion about venue can run in parallel.

so let us now consider the following dates:

Nov 2016
Feb 2017
Mar 2017
Apr 2017
May 2017
Jun 2017
Jul 2017
Aug 2017
Sep 2017
Oct 2017
Nov 2017
Dec 2017
Jan 2018
Feb 2018

I can make all the dates above - so over to the rest of you now. Just for the record I can also make UK or Amsterdam.

Omar

Hi Omar Most of those dates would suit but April July or October 2017 Would suit or even November this year any Venue will do.

Richard.

Hi Omar

2020+ is my best time. I'll be free to go wherever, whenever after then (and fully intend to do so). At the moment I cannot commit to the earlier times.

Hi Omar,

I am in the same position as Geoff - I have to restructure my financial situation to eliminate the current 24/7/365 day demands on my time as a self-employed self-funded retiree. My current expectation is this will be sometime in 2018 however the current and my assessment of the future Australian economic situation is making it very difficult to determine when will be the best time to restructure once I complete upgrading my property portfolio to get the best possible sale prices.

If there is an earlier get-together, I will be watching from afar with great regret that I am not there.

Let me put you at ease David - the country is now completely stuffed and will only get worse. Omar I will try to make it any time you are there. Amsterdam is good and there are I think some find classic car places to look at if we don't get too ripped up in the cafes and bars but at least we can be a bit more messy than in Dubai but not as messy as we could get in Russia ! I will bring the Toad.

Omar,

Im in.
Most months would suit me with the exception of July 2017.
Amsterdam is fine for me (it's only a 90min drive from where I live).

Omar I think UK would be a better venue to meet as it would be a shame if Bob could not make it and there are so many members in the UK plus we could have a crack at Hunt House.

London is as easy for me as Amsterdam is.

Great idea Vlad!!
I agree......
let us make that the UK for now - and we will choose where best at a later date.
Bob would suggest Bournemouth and indeed he would be right if we timed our visit to coincide with the annual Beaulieu autojumble......
If you chaps havent been to it - it is mind blowing.

Sorry Benoit - could you handle the additional miles?

Okay just for that Geoff, I am in for London summer (is there such a thing?) 2017.I can get a stop over in Bangkok Thailand and get Rolls Royce tee shirts made up for all of us commemorating the evil get together of RR/B lovers internationally.

Don't worry I will get the moderator to come too. I will make him an offer he can't refuse !

Vladimir,

Unfortunately my current nemesis is the 24 hour/7 day a week/52 week a year obligations as a self-funded retiree with a business providing furnished accommodation in two different parts of Sydney 1 hour apart if traffic conditions are good. I do all renovations/maintenance/letting on my own and as one of the properties is over 130 years old and heritage listed, hard-won experience over the years is essential if and when problems arise as much of the earlier changes made by others were not done with future maintenance and upkeep in mind and, unfortunately, without considering the need to preserve the heritage features of the inside of the building. One of the worst examples is a cedar staircase that was painted with oil-based paint in the 1950's and it is unlikely this can be fully restored.

Fortunately, the Federation street corner facade from the 1909 rebuilding of the original 1880 building is largely unmolested and has been heritage listed to preserve what is left of the original turn of the century commercial streetscape. I am optimistic I will finally finish the internal rectification work in the next 6 months before deciding whether to sell the property or wait as appropriate to market conditions. Then comes my family home which has to be prepared for sale as it is too big and will be a future problem for me as its location is more appropriate for an agile younger couple with a large family than for a couple like my partner and possibly myself who face future mobility problems.

I hope these problems will be resolved and settled early in 2017 and we will be free to start enjoying life without having the current mill stones around our necks. Right now, I cannot commit to 2017, 2018 is a definite possibility and 2021 a certainty for my attendance.

P.S. My suggestion would be to arrange a time around the Goodwood Revival each September:

https://www.goodwood.com/flagship-events/goodwood-revival/

This is not far from the R-R Goodwood assembly plant and, no doubt, a visit would not be difficult to arrange for our group plus Robert Reddington might be able to suggest places of interest around Bournemouth and the West Country.

Goodwood in September or Beaulieu in early May - bit cold for my liking. And we have to think about Omar - he risks getting frostbite in those conditions. There must be an event in late June, July or early August.

Hahahaha love your concern Geoff.
I lived in the UK for many many years - I will cope with the temperature.

Dear Vlad,
love the idea of the T shirts.

Dear David,
I am crossing fingers that you get at least one of the properties done by 2017. Or if Vlad can kidnap you and get your ass on a plane bundled up in true Soviet style.

So what will it be? May,June,July, August or September 2017?

I prefer if we connect with a major UK event like either Goodwood or Beaulieu. I have been to Beulieu and it was so so so up our street as classic car enthusiasts - but I have never been to Goodwood. Perhaps Goodwood is more about racing of classic cars - I dont know. I am happy to go with the crowd on this one.

So far we have: me, Vlad, Geoff, Mark, Benoit, Richard and if we are lucky David.
If we get more then yippee ( and I am sure we will) but if we dont - we have the basic ingerdients for a party!!

Let us make it happen.....

Let us kick the venue around a little until we firm that one up.

David I am sure to get a job by then so I will pay your way. We could be gone for only a week. Rather than just reject the idea I would humbly ask that you chew it over in your mind for some time realising that you spend a lot of time moderating this site for which I believe all the contributors are extremely thankful for.

What kind of forum would we have without you as moderator ?

So as this will be the first face to face meeting of what is essentially a RR/B club of international distinction in cyber space which has resulted in an unbelievable amount of technical information transferred between members for the servicing and renovation of these fantastic automobiles it really means you must be there.

I mean good grief you know what we are like - we could go to an English Bar somewhere probably called "The Dead Rat" and start arguing about whether Camargues were better than Corniches and with much alcohol get into a brawl and Fleet Street would have it all over the pages. "RRFORUM CAUSES AFFRAY IN LONDON PUB - Dogs Bitten Cats Belted - Toad of Toad Hall found sleeping in whisky glass - Queen not amused " The scandal could be monstrous !

We need you there !

Vladimir,

My problem is not money - I can afford the travel without any difficulty.

My problem is time - I cannot plan ahead for anything without something intervening. I am a "one-man band" as I do everything involved with maintenance/renovation myself other than extremely specialised work that requires tools I do not have or can only be done by a person with the appropriate licence. Many times I gave gone to my country home for a few days break and a couple of hours later I have been back in my truck on my way to Sydney to fix whatever has gone wrong and cannot be left until my intended return. I keep my occupants happy and this is why I have a very low turn-over rate and get good occupants however this requires immediate response to sort out problems whether real or imagined. This problem has also meant I have been unable to attend RROC[Aust] Club activities in recent years.

To eliminate this problem, I have to sell the properties and the difficult task is going to be finding alternative investments to provide reasonable returns whilst being resistant to erosion by inflation in future years. I have a problem that I have no interest in "professional" financial planners and their ilk as I have a distinct reluctance to use someone whose advice may cause me to lose investment value/income and getting paid for it as has happened for other family members when I could do the same thing myself at less cost .

I believe I have done extremely well with past investments and timing portfolio changes to respond to changing economic conditions - my guiding philosophy has always been "buy in a recession, sell in a boom" and accept reasonable rather than massive returns in return for flexibility and security. Perhaps this is something I inherited from my father who was a traditional conservative bank manager from a family that survived the 1930's Great Depression with great hardship when my grandfather died prematurely and my grandmother had to bring up 7 children when there was very limited [if any] government financial support for widows. My father and his two elder sisters left school and worked to provide financial support for my grandmother and her younger children. We have always been a close extended family even today and I am certain this has been a direct consequence of our parents difficult years when growing up.

Like I said previously, attending in 2017 is impossible, attending in 2018 is highly probable, 2019 and later will be a certainty unless the world implodes beforehand.

David have you run the figures on what you miss out on being a self funded retiree ? It's horrid. Just on a cash basis alone you are letting the thieving government keep $223,600 if you last 10 years beyond retirement and a whopping $447,200 if you last 20 years. Now fatboy Australian Ambassador to the USA blurted we could live to 140. Obviously he was delusional as he was a total pig of man but I think being a self funded retiree is being overly generous to the tax man.

I am not telling you to country skip and change your name to something hideously untraceable like "Billy Smith" pick up a passport in some place that sells them move to another country and change your name again and then put the lot into a numbered Swiss or Virgin Island bank account, but I can tell you if I was in your shoes I would gut the tax commissioner like a bloody fish.

You are being punished for being wise. Everybody should get the pension. And I note that Finland and other very advanced Scandanavian countries are looking at paying everybody a set amount whether they are looking for a job or not.

I want to get a job - but I have to compete at almost 60 with thousands of phillipinos and other 457 visa mechanics who never ever care about work safety and don't the employers love that !

I may even have to come back to Sydney to get a job. The argument that the 457 visa immigrants are not taking our jobs is bloody insulting and totally untrue and that's just one of the reasons why if I have the chance I will do a serious burn on the government and have not the slightest bit of guilt about it.

David - $447,200 could buy you a few very nice Corniche Convertibles and you know you must have one again.

But David if you can't make it then perhaps jetsetters like Omar and I and other scalliwags will perhaps make it a bi annual affair.

Next stop Stalingrad where we can really get smashed !

Hi Vladimir,

Fortunately I qualify for the Small Business Capital Gains Tax Retirement Exemption as my properties are active assets because I am in the business of providing visitor accommodation and this is my full-time business activity as I do my own lettings, management and repairs and do not use Real Estate Agents under any circumstances. I do not have superannuation as this will be provided by the goodwill in my business and capital gains on the properties when I sell them inclusive with the business on formal retirement.

My commercial tenants are having similar problems to you with competitors' abuse of 457 visas and short-stay workers arriving on tourist visas and then working at poverty level pay rates without paying tax. It is so obvious when you walk past the premises involved in these rackets but nothing ever seems to be done to check the status of the workers and their pay rates/tax payments.

Of course, governments can change retirement rules at any time and these changes may not always be to the benefit of the prospective self-funded retiree. I am "walking on a tightrope" right now as there is no certainty that the current rules will apply when I do retire. Time will tell if I have been wise to wait or have missed the opportunity to maximise my benefits by waiting too long.

I will be with you all in spirit and looking forward to seeing the pictures and hearing about your exploits when the first get-together occurs. Whatever you do, please do not phone me from the get-together and say "wish you were here"; it is not pretty hearing a grown man cry from disappointment ...........................

Richard,

We will be in Wales so Welsh rarebit should be chosen to go with the coffee and certainly with the beer.

My grandmother made a classic rarebit for me every time we visited her and I could never get enough. My grandfather was born in the Rhondda Valley and my grandmother's parents also came from the Valley so it was the real thing - my problem is the recipe for her version died with my grandmother as a search of my mother's recipe book failed to reveal the recipe.

My love affair with Wales started when I was 11 years old and spent my first full week there, at my high school's mountain centre in the Black Mountains. Maengwnedd nr Mochnant was the place. Later trips to Porthmadoc, Portmeirion, the Ffestioniog Railway and so many other places. A meeting in Wales would be cool.

The one Country I have not visited is Ireland. Shameful really, considering I lived just across the water for so long and have had so many Irish friends and work colleagues. I'm currently watching "Creedons Epic East" which is a documentary about the east coast of the Republic. Amazing country whose history goes back more than 5000 years. Pity the six Northern Ireland counties aren't included.

lets take this discussion to the thread "Amsterdam here we come".
Then perhaps someone can explain to the non British people how to actually pronounce "rarebit". The true pronunciation of this strange name is not as you read it. It is not rare bit. Come on you Brits, educate us....

Hi Omar,

Those of us facing a long-haul flight to attend will probably take the opportunity to catch up with our international contributors as the additional cost of traveling in Europe and the UK is affordable once the long-haul cost is covered.

The pronunciation of "rarebit" is covered in the link below however the speaker lacks the true Welsh accent being harsh rather than the soft lilt of native Welsh speakers as exemplified by my grandfather in words and song as he and my great-grandfather won many Eisteddfod tenor solo competitions before they left Wales to come to Australia just before WW1 after being recruited by John Brown for his Australian coal mines near Newcastle.

I will move the relevant posts as requested.

I was once told that the correct pronunciation of rarebit would make it sound like Raabett.
Maybe someone was pulling my leg then....

Omar,

The correct pronunciation is a variation of the English "rabbit" due to the Welsh accent so you were not being mislead; just someone trying the Anglicise the Welsh language [something the British have been trying to do to the Welsh from the 13th Century and the Scots from the 14th Century].

My elder son has Llewllyn [pronounced "hugh ellen"] as a middle name to recognise the Welsh part of his ancestry. His son has Gruffydd [pronounced "griffith"] as his middle name to continue the tradition I started with my son in honour of the maternal great-grandfather my son never knew. My other son has Lloyd as his middle name [the double L is pronounced "le" and not "hugh" as in Llewellyn].

I have one of my grandfather's Eisteddfod medals which traditionally goes to the first-born son so I know it will be safe for the next two generations and hopefully for more in the future.

Wales is a side trip for my partner and I before/after the main event for family history reasons and the possibility of meeting up with some long-time forum members on the way.

There are a few steam trains I wish to revisit as well, York for the UK National Rail Museum and Crewe.

Dear David,
Do you want to pin down a date with Vlad and then I will confirm whatever date you two choose. We will need to get the plan sort of shaped up as early as we can to ensure we get tickets and accommodation etc sorted.
Be sure to make Dubai your stop-over on at least one of the legs of the journey.
Take care
Omar

Dear David,
Thanks for the Welsh clarification. I have some very happy moments from my student days in Wales. We used to go across the bridge from Bath to Cardiff and Barry. Great fun was had by all.

David it is so hard for me to keep up with current events, another place worth visiting is the transport museum at Coventry very interesting, I visited it a few years ago the jet plane without wings is there and all the motor cycles and cars that were the best of British.

Thanks Richard, I am always interested in anything to do with transport especially steel wheels on steel rails!!

My paternal grandfather had a family connection with Coventry so another reason to visit.

Omar,

A tad too early for me to confirm dates yet as I haven't fully completed the current renovations but things are looking positive that they will be completed and the property sold by the end of this year.

I suggest the best date would be late European summer at the tail end of the tourist season when more accommodation to choose from should be available.

I can guarantee there will be a stop-over in Dubai to meet the Sham family and experience the local food and culture.

Vladimir is quiet at the moment most likely due to the perennial problem of work demands so hopefully he can advise what dates would suit him.

Good idea but is there a graphic designer amongst us capable of designing an appropriate badge?

Will think about an appropriate name and any suggestions will also be welcome for consideration.

Dear David,
The mere fact that you are able to come is great news. I will flex around your dates.
The badge thing could be a great little competition for a senior school art project. Is anyone married to a teacher or has a daughter/son who are teachers?
Thanks

Gents
I like the idea of a badge.
Is it something that you guys want to put on your cars?
I removed the badge bar from my car, who else still runs them?
Does anyone have a list of what would need to be on the badge?
RR logo?
A country flag? (What country is now a matter of contention)
Image of a car?
Crossed swords & beer glasses?

Patrick my thoughts would be something along the lines of an image of the world with the spirit of ecstasy in it somewhere and maybe Friends of RR and B on it.

I rather like the idea of a map of the world including the Spirit of Ecstasy and Bentley mascots however the wording to go with it is still a work in progress.

On another matter if my current expectations come to fruition, I am considering a side trip to Poland to participate in a "Wolsztyn Experience" - what is this you ask?

Have a look at the following link and all will be revealed.......

http://www.thewolsztynexperience.org/footplating.php

This is one of the most important items on my lifetime bucket list and if anyone else is also interested, we could try for a group booking possibly with some extra inclusions.

I wish i had the same enthusiasm for railways as i ought to - but I grew up in the desert and didnt even see a train until I was 14. I will give this one a miss. I understand there is a Canadian equivalent of the Polish train experience too.

Jetsetters and scalliwags. The Wolsztyn experience looks supercool and may cut into my vodka expense budget reserved for being shot to the edge of space in a very fast Mig jet ( a mere snap at approx $15,000) which possums as you all know is of course essential.

That aside I am in the throws of designing zee badge. Each one will have on the rear a code and only I will have a list of the codes until I croak then the list will turned over to the administrators heir.

Eerk. A special badge for the administrator and the moderator to who we are all grateful will be produced. All badges will be rarer than a RHD Camargue.

Omar just putting the final touches on the car badge design and as you will understand no design can please everybody given the diversity of all the grandmasters not to mention the newbies.

What are your thoughts on the Bentley riff raff. I mean are we going to let people not cut from the right cloth in the door or shut the blighters out to maintain standards what what!

Should I put that hideous wing on the badge or could that lead to beastliness or unsightly behaviour? I understand letting even the Americans attend is well quite er novel etc well you know what I mean....

I was hoping to confess to you that I have more Bentleys than Rolls-Royces in person rather than do it by email.... the shame of it.... I know!!!
Right.... now that I have got that off my chest.... let us work out what we have already agreed:

The venue will be UK (exact location TBA)
The date is roughly September 2017 but Vladimir and David will help in pinning down an exact date.

I am excited at the prospect of buying my first ever custom made badge. Come on Vlad show us what you have designed so far.

September 2017 looks good for me at this stage - my partner Sue will be travelling with me as we will be doing a 3 month or longer trip in conjunction with my attending the get-together.

I hope most of our UK and European forum members will be able to join us plus any US members who are able to cross the Atlantic to join us.

The excitement and anticipation is increasing.......

David, if your partner is coming , then I am sure Jackie will be persuaded to come and James and his wife. ( I may need a chauffeur !!!)
At the moment James is very busy at work, hence little progress on the Shadow, but he is accumulating all of the repair panels and is hoping to start stripping it out next week ( he has a week holiday !)

Vladimir,

From my past experience with English weather, late summer tends to be more reliable than early summer. I remember one day in late May in Canterbury when I experienced 4 seasons in one day; rain then snow then wind then sun. Late September should have more consistent weather than late Spring/early Summer but I will defer to local knowledge from our UK members.

Mark,

I am hoping some of the participants would be interested in bringing their partners so we can arrange some activities of interest to them while we do our thing. I am anticipating our get-together will be more than one day and may involve some side trips to interesting locations and visits to some of our contributors [Robert [Bob] Reddington - I am thinking of you in particular].

Paul Penderyn Distillery there is a seed of an idea in that, What about hiring a coach in which we all travel in to destinations of interest to be agreed, and stopping at some nice old coaching house in the evening for dinner and a natter maybe even see Toad of Toad Hall, What do you think of that Vladimir?

Omar,

Depending on interest, a side trip to Amsterdam might still be an option those of us from distant shores would be interested in.

I may rename this thread tomorrow so if anyone has some suggestions; please post them now.

September is also time for the Goodwood Revival which is usually sometime in the first two weeks of the month plus the R-R Goodwood factory is near by for a visit if interested.

I've been to the Goodwood Revival for the last 5 years and can thoroughly recommend it. Not only race cars but also plenty of Bentleys and Rolls Royces to drool over. A superb event, also for those bringing their better half.
And indeed, the Rolls Royce factory is only a few miles away.

Since this first meet was your creation Omar perhaps you should pick a date and a hotel in which we all should meet. There appears to be many hotels in Crewe. At that first meet the badges and tee shirts can be given out then we can all decide where we are going to go. I can give my employer the sack if he doesn't like my dates. No actually I will give my employer the sack if he says no to my dates in the UK and that's because this forum has given me much enjoyment laughs and vital information and I just love sacking capitalists anyway. So I think its up to you Omar.

Thanks Vladimir.
Before we pin down a date I have to be assured that the all-important moderator can make it.
The next thing we want to agree on is whether Beualieu is an event that all want to attend (with it being a fixed time - we will have to think hard about how important it is to attend this autojumble).
Vlad - if there are any impossible to get parts for your Camargue that you cannot find anywhere in the world - chances are you will be able to find them at the autojumble in Beaulieu.

We also need to plan an itenerary and to get a bus so we can all get around. I dont think it needs to be too big a bus as i doubt we will get any more than 11 on this tour. This being the case, I am happy to be the designated driver given that I rarely drink.
so over to you guys now so we can flesh this out a little.

Thanks

Pravda as I am certain you know is the name of our number one Soviet newspaper which only spoke truth and that's why its called Pravda and cobet is actually Russian for Soviet.

But my dear Middle Eastern Brother of Perpetual Indulgence, the first forum meeting of this most noble internet swaray - should we not be tooling around the UK in a bloody RR ?? Perhaps even an unreliable one ? Owned by some likely lad in need of some totally declared under the counter cash ? Goodness me Omar it could be a bloody bus made in well you know where Omar!

How does 7-12 September sound to everyone?
Can we confirm that we can also make the Beaulieu autojumble if we chose these dates?

itinerary includes:

. Beaulieu
. Crewe
. Yorke's Village/town/city
. Coventry Motor Museum
. London

We need to refine the itenerary - so let us work it a little.
I love how mad you lot are. I can see this event actually taking place!!
And Richard - what a star!!! thanks for the offer of your bus R.

I'm not entirely sure but I believe the Goodwood Revival will take place on the 8-9-10th of September.
If so, I will certainly visit (not the entire 3 days)as I do every year. However I could certainly combine it with our get together.

Just a thought for comment:

Members of the RROC[Australia] are well-known for attending events in the UK, Europe and USA even freighting their cars over to participate.

Should participation in the get-together be restricted to Forum members only or extended to interested RROC[Australia] members?

Why did I know that somebody would ask that question? The forum is free, everybody apart from scammers are welcome thus the first face to face has to follow such a noble tradition. I was going to ask the Director of FS to attend so I could get hold of the Foxy Pup and also Mr Yorke.

I agree - All are welcome.
They just need to get their heads around the fact that we are just a bunch of mates and for them not to expect too much of a corporate style event.

Greetings,
Having followed this thread for some time I have become increasingly more interested at the opportunity to meet those whose contributions on many matters I have followed over the years. Omar not knowing your age but I thought I should mention that mini bus hire for the 70+ in the UK is difficult if not impossible. I have spoken to Mrs L and currently I also would be available with transport to help in this grand tour, Bentley Turbo or Silver Spirit . As a suggestion only, perhaps consider meeting in London possibly stopping the night and meeting and greeting and getting to know everyone. Next day move onto Beaulieu. On the M4 down to the Gower (S. Wales) and then to Paul Yorke's Emporium, possibly a side step to Pontpriydd a visit for David. Head up the Welsh Coastline to Crewe. Visit Bentley, there is not else of interest in Crewe but it may require an overnight stopover. Then turn around head South to Visit Coventry Motor Museum and if there is time take in The Heritage Motor Museum at Gaydon. Overnight stop then down to London. Much would depend on Flight arrival and departure times for final details. I trust I am not being to forward in my ideas but thought it might help in the planning. Look forward to seeing you in the UK. Best Wishes, Clive

Dear Clive,
I love it!!!
great plan!!
I will not speak for the others but for me, this sounds like a great tour.
Will there be a few ale houses en route where we can stop off and have a few laughs?

I actually have a 7 seater car in the UK that we could use if that was necessary, but I believe the offers we have had thus far for transport will suffice admirably.

Although I look 70+ in real life, I am actually only 55. Must be all that full-on partying when I was younger....

Clive,

One thing I can promise is there will never be a dull moment - the main problem will probably be getting a word in edgewise as there will be so much to talk about and compare our experiences.

I prefer long-distance driving [400kM+] so my skills[or lack of them] may not be needed. Should we arrange a future "Australian Experience", I will be in my element.......

Vladimir, you might have to install some "donga's" for our visitors as they certainly need to experience your part of our country. I don't think they would be happy sleeping in a swag under the stars although Puss Nasty might have some fun.

Hopefully Patrick might be able to arrange a suitable "demonstration" vehicle to transport the assembled multitude if an "Australian Experience" comes to fruition.

Omar,

I can promise you an Australian Experience organised by us will be one you will fondly remember for the rest of your life.

I trust the recent visit of your wife and daughter to Australia for the Touch Football competition will provide the motivation and it would be even better if they could accompany you.

Patrick,

Please do not change jobs or retire before this can happen.......

Hello to all on the Grand Tour,
I joined this thread a bit late and both Alan & Richard had already offered assistance with transport but thought at this initial stage perhaps those in the UK could start to plan the route in terms of distance and travel time. If we could make contact perhaps we can talk this planning over?
Will the victims, sorry visitors on the Grand Tour wish to travel by hired coach or by car, those on offer plus Omar’s?
I have been on the Beaulieu web site and could not find out when the Autojumble is taking place in 2017. If it follows the pattern from this year it will take place on the first weekend of September (2nd & 3rd) this will influence travel and arrival dates. I am not sure if this is the right way but as a rough guide possibly for each place to visit allow one day? So if the Grand Tour is going to Beaulieu, Paul’s place (is he happy with this!!), Bentley, Coventry Motor Museum, Gaydon Heritage Museum allow 5 days? Should the Grand Tour also try and get along to Rolls Royce, Goodwood?
Much will depend on what you agree on what to visit!!
I am trusting that this posting is helpful and not pushing things along to quickly, but this opportunity to meet is just too good to miss.
Yours, Clive

Dear Clive,
For me this tour cant come quick enough.
I am happy with whatever arrangement you "Home turf" crowd can propose. It would be lovely to have you with us Clive - thanks for your support.

Dear David,
My family love Australia. We will come back for sure. we have an uncle in Port McQuarie who we really should visit soon.

Dear Paul,
Does your town/village have a hotel/B&B for a rowdy crowd to stay in? If we showed up there and said we are all Paul's mates will you disown us? We will do our best not to embarrass you too much in your home town. Will you join us on any part of the tour?

Errk, Omar I would love to send my design of the Badge to you via this esteemed forum however if one considers the difficulties in members deciding when and where in UK we should meet, an art work like a badge will invoke more indecision than can be imagined.

Thus and therefore I intend to keep the design secret until I pull the buggers from the bags and award them.

Remember Omar, Stalin made decisions and Trotsky caused controversy hence his head icepicking in Mexico.

I think everybody likes a surprise and if they don't want the badge on their car then they can jolly well stuff the bugger into the closet at home next to the worthless dust collecting objects that prove so popular with the opposite sex and wives.

So sorry, cannot disclose my designs until we meet.

Dear Vladimir,
This is best kept as a secret to all. We must only show these badges when we photograph them on Richard, Clive and Benoit's cars. I imagine these will be amongst the first cars "on the scene" from the time the union starts.

Greetings All,
Looking down the list of places that have been suggested to visit,

Beaulieu Autojumble
Rolls Royce Motors
Goodwood Revival
Paul Yorke
Pontypridd
Bentley Ltd
Flying Spares
Coventry Motor Museum
Hunt House

In the dates under discussion 7th - 12th September and allowing for the British road network, narrow roads, road works and congestion, it may prove quite difficult to cover all those in with any degree of comfort. Perhaps the list needs shortening or the time in the UK lengthening?

Rolls Royce Motors and Bentley Motors would need to be booked in advance. My thinking was a request for a visit might carry more weight if the request came from the Rolls-Royce Owners' Club of Australia mentioning the reason for the meeting in the UK and where members were travelling from.

Hopefully when the list of places to be visited is confirmed myself and those in the UK who have already said they are coming on the 'Tour' can meet and to plan routes, watering holes and hay lofts or barns for accommodation.
Regards,
Clive

Hi Clive,

Some of the places you list are essentially visits for personal reasons and not ones of interest to other attendees.

I suggest the formal programme would only involve places of interest to all attendees and the others would be optional private visits by individual and/or other interested participants. Some of our participants may have limited time available and it is important for us to ensure they get maximum participation in the main activities.

I will be arranging appropriate letters from the RROC[Australia] once the final itinerary is confirmed.

Well the Flying Scotsman is hurling along again so as you can catch it from Kings Cross Station to Edinburgh that's a must for me.

I will of course be taking a number of hip, coat, sock and singlet flasks of high powered booze just in case the serving of spirits is not up to Soviet standard. I remember robbing the trolley on a flight from Manila to Brisbane to the great amusement to a Moslem family across the aisle. Obviously, puffing on a large Cuban cigar would bring me to the attention of the authorities but I think once in a person's life being smashed silly while staring out the window at such pretty countryside is essential.

But can anybody tell me if the company that built the Camargue still operates from the same building in Crewe.

My research shows me that the pub where RR/B workers once swilled beers down after fitting weird door handles for JRH 23682 has been ripped down for a housing estate - the rotters.

But yes perhaps the itenary needs paring down a tad perhaps.

Omar these badges are going to be articles that need to be bolted on as I shall not be supplying any double sided tape stick ons. Can you imagine anybody putting a stick on badge anywhere on a Rolls Royce!

Holy barbequed foxy pups! Does anybody have a pub in CREWE IN MIND FOR THE FIRST MEET???

Vlad,
Don't expect to find any RR DNA at Crewe. It is now a very efficient clean Bentley Factory and you wont see or hear the R word mentioned apart from on the rocker cover on a Merlin engine in the visitor center. I would try to add The Rolls Royce Heritage Trust in Derby to the itinerary. Specifically Number 12 Shop. It is an alladins cave. The Derby factory has also all but been demolished for housing.

Hello Mark,
Your comment on their being no DNA of RR at Crewe reminded me of story related to me about the building at Crewe. It seems the words ROLLS ROYCE are picked out in the brickwork above the entrance and the BENTLEY sign covers it. If this is true it would be good to think someone thought it would be an act of vandalism to erase the words Rolls Royce. True or a myth?
I was also fortunate to have a tour of the RR Heritage Trust and it is quite a remarkable place. Apart from the Merlin engines, development of jet engines and the Spitfire on show, Baden Powells Rolls Royce was also there having some work done.
Not far from Derby is a gentlemen with a private collection of Rolls Royces some 20 -30 and I went as a guest of the Bentley Drivers Club. There were so many outstanding cars to see but two did stand out. One I am sure was the first Rolls Royce ever built and the purchase sum was astronomical!! The second was a protoype early Rolls Royce, driven on test by Royce himself and complete with his notes on the changes and adjustments needed before the car could be manufactured. The owner of this collection I am told outbid BMW to aquire this car and notes. I am sure RREC has visited this collection in the past. Another place worthy of a visit?

Gentlemen!!!

up till now there has been 15 contributors to this topic from this number there has been a definite intention to attend by 11,

The dates chosen 7th to 12h September is too late to do Beaulieu auto jumble but suits Goodwood Festival and a visit to RR Goodwood and also Hunt house,

Crewe is over 200 miles in another direction its all doable but our choice of Hotel/Hotels would need to be chosen carefully to cut down travel time Perhaps someone with a bit of knowledge of the areas mentioned could suggest some suitable accommodation,

Also the main reason for this meeting is for all of us as friends to enjoy ourselves, Sure it will be great, cant wait.

Richard.

Richard,

I modified the layout of your message to make it easier to read.

I think we might get a few more interested when the arrangements are finalised and others find they want to or are able to attend.

Once the decision is finalised, I intend informing the RROC[Aust] members of the event and advising them they are eligible to attend as the Club supports this Forum.

P.S. A 200 mile trip is not a deterrent for those of us used to traveling long distances on a regular basis. In my university days, we would do a trip of this length just for fun to get a hamburger!!! The one-way trip between my Sydney and Manning Valley residences is longer.

The person you refer to guards his privacy fiercely and is only likely to open his home to people or groups he knows very well. I stayed at his home for a few nights in 1997 but doubt that even an approach from me would lead to a group visit. Others of more recent and frequent contact might fare better in negotiating a visit but I'd advise you not to get your hopes up.

Omar,

One thing it will take is the annus horribilis of 2016 to be in the proverbial rear view mirror and that 2017 not look so messy. It would help if my finances stabilize, too.

Given all the "back and forth" on this thread might I ask someone to either start another thread with the "nailed down" details listed or to add to this one with whatever is currently known? It seems like this has been set for September next year and somewhere in the UK but beyond that I really don't know.

Dear Brian,
Looking down the list of places that have been suggested to visit, here they are in condensed format as written by Clive:

Beaulieu Autojumble
Rolls Royce Motors
Goodwood Revival
Paul Yorke -Pontypridd
Bentley Ltd
Flying Spares
Coventry Motor Museum
Hunt House

We will have to modify this list to make it smaller and more practical.

The dates under discussion are 7th - 12th September.

Hi Omar yes I agree that in the time frame suggested the list is too long, Also it would be helpful to know who intends to be there, We would also need suitable accommodation arranged for the group, We would have to make some sort of application to the organisations that we would like to visit, Several of the group including myself have offered to bring their own vehicles but that might not work in reality so we might have to think about something else, These are just some of the things that would need to be addressed in the New Year.

Based on current progress, I am confident I will be attending.

Main impediment would be a major collapse in the Sydney commercial property market in the New Year. I will know for sure in February/March after the January holiday period.

Gentlemen, this year has been stressful to say the least, but in 2017 we are now in a position to relocate home and business to the East coast subject to finding a suitable property to renovate to accommodate home and business. For this reason I cannot commit, but I would hope to meet up with you at some point on your "tour" with both my wife and James, although I doubt his Shadow project will be completed in time! as he is also in the process of moving house. We may have a stall at Beaulieu next year , as there are a lot of BMC parts that won't be moving with us !

Omar,

I am 95%+ - it all depends on what economic actions our Government takes in the 1st Quarter of 2017.

I am both pessimistic about our politicians making the right decisions and optimistic our collective common sense will win in the end .

Alan that sounds good, I will be bringing my turbo R across the Irish sea for the same purpose.

Omar Beaulieu Auto Jumble will be over by the time we visit.

The Hunt house in Paulerspury, Flying Spares in Market bosworth Bentley Motors in Crewe, Coventry Transport Museum are all close to Birmingham and Pontypridd in wales is only 127 miles from Birmingham, Which makes these five of the remaining seven doable .in the time frame.

Omar that sounds like a plan, the earlier date means that Mark, James, and Mrs Aldridge, would be in the frame for at least a meeting, as they might have a stand at Beaulieu , It might also be worth mentioning that anyone is welcome to come for as long or as short a time as suits them it would be nice to meet as many as possible,

Will bring the Turbo R of course. I haven't sold it after what was said earlier in the year. Haven't really driven it much due to a warped disc like condition on the front which I don't really think is a warped disc, more of a sticking calliper condition. Should get it out for a quick run out to the pub on Christmas Morning. Looking forwards to September. Will be in touch over Dubai , there from the 28th.

What is the lead time for making the badges?

I would hold off as long as possible as I am expecting there will be a flurry of last minute acceptances when others realise they can make it.

Dear David,
that is simply fantastic news!!! I am delighted that you and Sue will be there for sure.

I think Richard has summed it up well and I agree totally. In fact if we start to flesh out the itinerary - perhaps more people could join in as we travel closer to where they may live.

In my household, Joanne never lets me plan the holiday - therefore I am now crap at doing that. Can someone please take on the planning of the week 2nd to 7th September please?

Many thanks chaps.

Hi all, some relevant information about venues that have been mentioned for visiting, Bentley motors do visits on a Friday they last for two hours and are booked in advance cost per person £30 and Finish at the end of June. Rolls Royce Goodwood have suspended all visits by the public, anyone wishing to visit them has to be a rolls Royce owner and organise a visit through their local dealership, this is what I was told today, The hunt house said that their historian probably would come in to show us around if the group decides to go. Flying Spares are also willing to have us for a visit, Tuesday Thursday or Friday being the most suitable days, Coventry Transport Museum is open to the public most days, Beaulieu Auto jumble is on 2nd and 3rd September, and the Goodwood revival is on ninth and tenth September, There is also a proposed visit to a brewery in Pontypridd, I personally am flexible on dates and venues, just looking forward to a bit of "Craic"

Actually Omar I am specifically after a time date and place for the first meeting and presentation of the car badges.

Now the lovely Indian chappy making these badges would just love to do the entire deal over the net. That is not going to happen because my assessment of India is that you would have to be stark raving mad to trust even your own shadow in such a place.

And that's apart from the fact that even Argentinians have told me its a downright dirty place where serious disease is to be expected.

As I can not find any badge makers outside the third world I will have to go there and face to face this guy.

That will cost loot and at the moment I have just but binged over 10 grand trusting somebody I should not have internationally. Err yes they were frog marched to a departure point in OZ and told to vanish before the unfortunate happened to them. Believe me they vanished instantaneously and without hesitation.

So old buddy, that's why I need time, date and place asap. Vladimir

Dear All,
It looks like we will have to stay with the original dates. It will be a huge loss to us not to have Ross with us this time.

We will have to have a special drink for Ross every single night between 2 to 9 Sept. Some nights we may have several drinks in honour of Ross.

The good news is that we will also have Stephen joining us.

Can someone start us off with an itinerary please?

Hi all concerned, first of all if we were visiting Beaulieu auto jumble event both days we would need accommodation close to there perhaps Southampton for two nights, then moving North to Birmingham to access Hunt House, Flying spares, Coventry Transport Museum, and possibly Crewe, Also there is the visit to Wales to be organised, Any thoughts or comments welcome, a couple of weeks ago I contacted The Hunt House about a visit, also I contacted Flying spares, both of these places were positive about us going, Coventry Transport Museum is open seven days a week and doesn't need prior booking, Crewe stops doing visits at the end of June, Some one in the know might be able to arrange a visit there.

Richard,

I might be able to organise a visit to Crewe with the help of an ex-RRMC engineer who had a major role in the design and manufacture of the Shadow and still lives in Crewe.

Only problem would be the loss of contacts due to their retirement.

Will contact him and try our luck otherwise is someone in the market for a new Bentley?????

David that would be great if that worked, or perhaps His Royal Highness Prince Omar Sham from Dubai Emirate and his entourage might request a visit, or even Soviet racketeer Mr Vladimir Ivanovich Kirrolov and his roughneck security team might just drop by unannounced.

Happy to don the robes for the occasion if that will help bluff our way in..... It worked when I did it last year to get into Bath Abbey

Great call regarding accommodation Richard.
I think the sooner we pin down the days the sooner people can book hotels/inns etc.

To all intrepid Travellers, As a native of these fair isles may I put forward a suggested route to be discussed. Perhaps consider going from Beaulieu on to the M3, then A34 to pick up the M4 motorway for South Wales, Swansea and Paul near Carmarthen. After visiting Paul one route could be to get back on the M4 towards Swansea and then go on the A465 (Heads of the Valley) at Neath. At Abergavenny go on the A40 up to Ross on Wye then on the M50 to meet the M5 near Worcester. Stay on the M5 then on to the M6 that goes past Crewe (Bentley). After Crewe many options but one option could be get back on the M6 (South) and come down as far as Cannock, then join the A5 and travel down to Atherstone to pick up the B4116 then the B585 at Sheepy Parva to get to Market Bosworth (Flying Spares). After Flying Spares take the minor roads to pass through Desford then to the A47 going towards Leicester to get on the M1 at Junc 21. Down the M1 to the M69 then take the M69 to Coventry (Motor Museum). From Coventry take the A45 down past Daventry then the A5 down past Towcester to Paulsbury (Hunt House).
I am sure this route can be modified before the 'event' but travelling in the UK on all roads can be time consuming and frustrating as time taken related to distance travelled is pot luck!!
Trusting this helps and promotes some discussion, Clive

Clive anything on the M6 can be a nightmare. It took us 5 1/2 hours to drive from Northampton to Blackpool last Friday and 5 hours back on Sunday excluding a stop ! 195 miles each way ! Petrol consumption 16 mpg in the Mulsanne. Our movements this year are undetermined, as our house is on the market and I am trying to buy a large renovation project in Norfolk but I will catch up with you at some point.

Hello Mark,
At any one time on our roads the ability to travel can be hindered by congestion, road works, breakdowns and accidents. I have just listened to the BBC News and there is talk about a 2 year repair on the M5 flyover.A route I had suggested before I heard the news that our travellers could come up the M5 to join the M6. I did say that my thread was the start for a discussion not a planned route.
Which ever route is decided on there is always going to be that chance that it would have been better to have chosen another route. Best of luck with the planning, Clive

See what I mean about the sense of humour?
In a pub atmosphere someone would have by now had to forfeit 4 fingers of ale at the very least. It may not even be the Polish ex-Soviet...... perhaps even the Welsh Australian - for just being our moderator.

These tenuous connections will get us into woeful trouble - but I am sure there will be much laughter and mirth from this crowd.

The agenda is a bit loosy goosy right now because we are all too scared to commit. I suggest we nominate one person to own each of the 7 days and then be the "boss man" to organise us for that day. This person will tell us where we meet and where would be good for dinner and choose how full on their day would be.

So!!!

who wants to own days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7?
Day 1 will be on 2nd Sept 2017 and we need to be close to Buealiue.

There is nothing stopping us from choosing Boss-man candidates for other days - so lets hear it from the boys.

We may decide that the Boss-man uniform will be something like a viking hat or similar.

I think a white cane and dark glasses might be more relevant .

"The blind leading the blind" comes readily to mind.

My personal opinion re the "boss man" is a lot of us may not have the local knowledge to do a proper job - I am waiting for information on whether a visit to Bentley at Crewe is possible.

The latest news that both R-R and Bentley no longer provide financial support to the RROC[Australia] is not encouraging as this suggests our Clubs are no longer seen as being relevant to their business.

I will only be arriving in the UK on the 7th, but I'm willing to see if I can organize something on the 7th or 8th.
As I'm going to be at the Goodwood Revival on the 9th, it will proabably have to be something not too far away.

Hi Everyone,

The gremlins have struck with a vengeance unfortunately so I have to give an early warning notice there is a possibility Sue and I may not be able to attend.

Unfortunately due to my ongoing medical problems and unexpected maintenance repairs on other properties, the preparation for sale of my major asset has suffered [my plans relied on this property being completed by June 30th] and it is now likely the sale may not be finalised in time for us to be able to participate. The cost of our trip plus the freedom for us to travel is entirely dependent on the sale of this property because it places continuous ongoing demands on my time as it is entirely self-managed by me from maintenance/repairs to administration [this is the reason I have to transition to retirement earlier than planned].

I am hoping miracles can happen and we are able to participate but my recent experience and medical advice suggests I have to be cautious about future extended travel commitments.

Not a happy chappy right now.............

Omar,

So do I but my current problems relate to medication side effects affecting my ability to undertake constant heavy work which means everything takes longer than it used to.

I remain hopeful things will work out but I have to err on the side of caution. However, if I miss the get-together, there will still be a later opportunity for a one-on-one get-together when we can travel free of hindrances.

I was looking forward to the group get-together and hopefully it might still be possible if things go better than current indications suggest but it will have to be a last-minute decision.

Accommodation is selling out really fast near Beaulieu. I need confirmation of who is able to attend for the nights 2nd/3rd September.Upon my wife's suggestion she proposes we stay in Christchurch which is nicer than Southampton..Approx cost 310 pounds for 2 nights with breakfast for single occupancy. It is the Kings arms hotel presuming they still have rooms left. Please let me know if anyone wants me to confirm a group booking so i know how many to book for.

Omar,

Please do not book anything for us - things going backwards for us right now. If we can come, we will arrange accommodation at the time.

The old saying "troubles come in threes" certainly applies to me right now. If I was superstitious, I would say there is an influence from the grave who does not want the property to leave the family after 90+ years of ownership over 3 generations.

"Damned if I do and damned if I do not" - a classic "no win" situation.

David sorry to hear of your current situation, I hope your health improves, and that Sue and yourself can make the journey in September.

Omar I am confirming that I would be happy to be included in a group booking with breakfast included, Pay when you stay, No advance payment and would also suggest that all accommodation that we book myself included, cap the cost of accommodation to £150 per single room.

Richard.

Ps I was in Spain for a couple of weeks that is why I have been so quit.

Dear Richard,
I have been thinking that perhaps such a trip may be a bit too much of a commitment for most folk. I have therefore been considering leaving it all a bit loosey goosey and roughly indicate interest of those who may or may not wish to come - yet firm up a schedule that people can dip in and out of as they please. People may not want a whole week of full on hydraulic system discussions when they can spend some of that time talking about sex and drugs and rock and roll.

So let us firm up a plan for where we will be for that week and then people can dip in and dip out as they please.People can book their own accommodation and travel plans.

Please don't hesitate with a rough date plan.

As you know I will be in Italy during this time.
