Since some on this site have shown very kind concern about my health I thought it best to start a new thread soley about my progress. Or oh woe is me.

Today less visits to the loo and no pain but some discomfort.

The colonscope has been rescheduled for next week. That pico laxative really pole axe me big time. I near fainting cramps clammy and nauseous. My wife phoned the emergency no that came with the pico laxitive. The medic said not to take thd second dose because pico lax is very powerful and if he had known I had colitis he wouldn't have prescribed pico lax. So a hospital cock up. Nobody died so I won't complian.

I am zimmer frame free.

I am hoping that the colitis will carry on dimishing each day.

Once the loo visits are down to sensible level I will start thinking about driving.

I still take morphine. According to the notes that come with the morphine it is ok to drive once my body is used to it.
That sounds like addicted. The current thinking is that the addiction is safer than pain and because I not taking morphine because of mental problems, it's easy to ween me off.

Bob

I was curious if you have taken antibiotics just prior to this bout of colitis. Pseudomembranous colitis can be caused by the antibiotic erythromycin. It's part of the penicillin group. I always steer clear of it, but I know it is still used.

No. Before all this happened I steered clear of taking any and all drugs. I have always been the sort of person that thinks going to the doctor or hospital is only for serious stuff.

Hello BOB UK.
I have been following your posts for some time and they always make for a good read. Sorry to see that your health has taken a bad turn.
I have been having problems for the last six months and now have quite a few factory manufactured items inserted as replacements. I live in France and our local hospitals (Aix and Salon) are staffed with (so far) competent staff. Smallest problem they shove you through the scanner.
Ouf etc.
Keep up your spirits and don't stop writing.
Kind regards
Anton DB

Pseudo membranous colitis. The membrane in my descending and Sigmund colon is inflammation ( tense and grammar gone awry)
Undetermined colitis could be pseudo colitis.

Today I went from 9am to 3pm with out a visit to the loo. Then started to get cramps.

6 hours of freedom is progess. Colitis can be every 15 mins.

The social services has given me a commode. Usless junk. My wet room is 18 steps. The commode has to be emptied in the wet room. My wife is my wife not a slave so I would have to empty it so might as well use the wet room toilet in the first place. Also 18 steps is more exercise.
Exercise is important because bed ridden people tend to get worse and die.

I also feel less tired. I was sleeping 16 hours a day now only 8. This makes me bored so I start doing things which is good.

Talking to another person with colitis a nurse about the same age as me.She said the last attack was 6 years ago and lasted 27 weeks. 6 years sounds good but 27 weeks not so good.

At the moment 8.30pm I feel OK. I am getting waves of discomfort every 15mins for about 2mins.
I just have to ride it.
Interestly the descending colon is on the left side. I find laying on my left side mutes the discomfort. Also the doctors always laid me on my left side for the camera and enemas.

I have just done a check and there are no antibiotics in my pills.

Time for a cup of tea. Liquids are important it's easy to dehydrate without realising as I found out the hard way.

Anton I am glad you enjoy my postings. Thank you merci.

I had a French nurse, he was good and nice man. He looked after me along with another nurse Big John.

I empathise with anybody going through the hospital stuff.

There's so much to go wrong.

I also have metal hip joints. The second operation nearly killed me. I came round and they put me on the ward. Then I stopped breathing. I remember nothing of this. I was told by the guy in the next bed that he thought I was dead.

No grave gonna hold my body down.

It's not an exact science.

Today I tidied up my man cave a bit and pumped up both cars tyres. It didnt tire me out to much. And I moved my Jeep. And unblocked a drain.

I am going to the loo less. But still have discomfort.

I am getting better.

I am wary of the colonoscope because if the doctor makes a mistake and tears the membrane or similiar then I am in trouble. It has happened.

I met a young lady who colon burst and the doctors saved her and repaired her colon. A very brave girl not to fall to pieces.

I am trying to get better so that camera is not needed
Plus lying around doing nothing is boring.

My wife is worried because it's her life as well that is affected. I try not to by doing stuff my self. Now I am ex zimmer frame I can make my own tea.

A key thing to recovery is support even if it's kind words from afar. My family have been diamonds. My mates have also been very kind.

When the days are long and the night is yours alone. Just hold on and have faith that everything will be fine.
A bit of REMs everybody hurts.

Note because both cars are idle I pumped the tyres to 40psi. I must remember before they driven to reset them.

Stop press. I have no discomfort or pain and I feel good. 6.15pm. This has just happened. I am getting better.

Hi Bob,

Pleased with your progress especially your increasing ability to resume normal activities. A testament to the power of positive thinking and determination to succeed.

Your key to recovery comment is the secret "magic potion" that keeps you motivated and maintains your positive mental attitude which is the best healer of all.

The influence of mind over matter is often overlooked or ignored in health issues due to our preoccupation with chemical remedies.

Mind over matter.

I have noticed that when I concentrate of something such as playing a guitar or unblocking drain. The pains fades a bit But if the task goes on too long the pain catches up.

Today I am being lazy. because my right hand is aching a bit.

However I lifted a 110 amp deep cycle battery on to my charging bench.

I am convinced that I will get better because I have thd urge to do stuff.

Last year I laid plans to drive my Shadow to the Paris Metro car show. Its not going to happen this year but next year will do.

A friend many years ago said that I was a survivor.

Since becoming unwell I have met others who seem resigned to their fate, they have dead eyes and can't be bothered to even talk.

Nicotine.
Evidently if a smoker stops smoking then they could get colitis. (exetremely rare )
Resuming smoking can cure the colitis. It doesn't work if they have never smoked.

The boffins are trying to find out how it works.

Today has been a pain filled day.
I have been unable to do anything but lay down and watch brain dead TV. I tried to play guitar but couldn't.

I reckon I am still getting better because I now walk faster and I am standing up straight all 5ft 11 inches of me.

The doctor agrees and was surprised at my size. She thought I was 5ft 7 inches.

Jazz woodbines or bob hope is usefull for colitis. I misunderstood what the nurse told me

I am signing off now because of pain.

Bob sorry to hear of your illness hope you are getting over the worst and on your way to a speedy recovery.
Ps o/topic, have you changed your car to historic with DVLA, I had to tax mine free of charge at the post office and they then sent the v5c to DVLA for change.
A battle with DVLA now as it seems the have opened an investigation as to where the v5c has gone.

Pat thank you for your kind concern.

The last 2 days have been a bit of trial.

I haven't got round to the road tax. My Shadow is sorn at the moment.

Cannabis. I have been reading up on this stuff. The brain has cannabis receptors. The bowel has a brain as well with cannabis receptors. The medics think that getting the receptors to fire off helps the healing. The bowel gradually removes water from the stools. Because my bowel is inflammed the water removal bit isn't working properly. Hence diarrhoea. Plus water that should be kept isn't. Thus I have to drink lots.

Apart from the last 2 days I am getting better. Also I am learning to manage the colitis.

A co-worker was about to die last year after being sick for months with diarrhea, nausea, etc. Finally he went to Oschner's in New Orleans. Diagnosis? He was taking Benecor for high blood pressure and it was killing him. He's back at work about fit as ever. The Doctor there had seen one other case, thank God, so he knew.

I said I was lucky to be alive when I first became ill.

Well I am lucky, because a dear friend has just died. He was a very fit 65 year old who rode a push bike everywhere. He got an infection. They amputated his leg..He was working out how to ride a bike with one leg, he had a heart attack and died. He used to laugh at my jokes.

I am so lucky.

I am starting to control thd colitis. I have found that if I eat for two days and then fast for a day.

I feel fitter.

The medics are leaning towards my autoimmune system being overactive.
I think I got an infection which my immune system got rid of but my immune system carried on going. A bit like vigilantes getting it wrong and beating thd wrong bloke up.

I only take any drug if I have googled it to get the full info. If I find anything bad I ask my GP.

Hi Bob,

Great news and just goes to prove the old saying "you cannot keep a good man down".

An "Italian tune-up" usually keeps an engine operating at peak performance so keep picking up the revs but do not "red line" if you can help it .

I did 45 mins lawn mower chasing and I felt tired. But after rest 30 mins I am ok.

Also I think I have just saved someone life over the internet. A mate said his nieghbour was shaky and they couldn't make sense of what he was saying. They took him to hospital. Sepsis.

I empathise with you, Bob. Today I emptied the washing machine after an overnight wash, hung out the clean clobber to dry, refilled the machine and then cleared up the lawn after my dogs. After that I was obliged to come indoors and take a good dose of GTN spray before sitting down. That was a half hour ago and I need another dose as the angina hasn't settled down. According to my GP that's sufficient grounds to call an ambulance, but with 2 dogs and no-one to look after them while I'm not here it will take a lot more than that for me to spend yet another 2 or 3 nights in hospital 'under observation'.

At the moment he's experimenting with the dosages of another med which may or may not produce positive results. In the meantime I've got a couple of clinic appointments for one more set of tests as well as the first in a series of visits to see my cardiac specialist. However I'm not complaining as the NHS has done everything it can to keep me above ground level despite all my attempts to go for a 'dirt nap'.

I am sorry to hear that you have angina. That can be very painful.
I don't get too much pain now due to morphine. But sometimes my legs turn jelly ( they will be alright in a trifle.) and I have to sit down or fall down.

Its annoying because I just want to do the garden. The mind wants to but my body doesn't.

But each day is another day.

I have nothing but praise for my local NHS trust. They saved my life.

On TV was a hospital fly on the wall show.
This young guy has MS and sepsis. The doctor told him that if he has a heart attack they will let him go. He survived.

Its not until it happens to oneself that one realises how life can change so quickly. I will never be "cured" but at least it is not fatal. A fellow patient with colitis had it for 30 years and he was over 90 years old.

Fortunately my wife holds the fort when they drag me off to hospital. I keep a bag ready packed.

You look after yourself mate. Make sure you eat properly and drink plenty of fluids and sleep well.

If the angina happens after 30 mins light exercise do 15 mins then rest and then do another 15mins.

Like you I keep an 'emergency bag' packed with all the essentials ready for my next 'hotel' visit.

Essentials such as PJs, bathrobe, slippers, mobile phone charger, medical history, washing products, reading materials, etc.

I have no problem with my fluid intake. I brew most of it myself

I take a copy of all the meds. Every time I talk to medics the first thing they want to see is what pills I take.

If one boils lager and condense the fumes the brew gets stronger. I forget what the end product is called.

Spirits are Shadow based you know.

Alcohol helps heart conditions providing one doesn't get rat *rsed.

My dad had a heart condition and at the end he was slighty drunk 24/7. A nurse told him off and he's said my heart will kill me first. He passed ready pickled. His heart slowed and faded Under his bed I found empty bottles of Jack Daniels. The Doctor was really good.

I am almost teatotal but rums nice. A real pain is the amount of fluids I have to drink. Sometimes I drink loads and my pee is still dark.

I tried a Jazz woodbine and I really don't know what they see in it. One gets a sort of heavy feeling for about 30mins and thats about it. No where as good as Morphine which I dont pay for. Also a mate smokes dope and the walls in his front room are stained by it. That cannot be good for you.

Obviously I keep a few lists of my current prescriptions as they're changing all the time.

'Boiling' a weak brew and capturing the fumes to make it stronger is known as distillation. There are other ways of achieving the same end, but all of them are unlawful without an expensive license in the UK. Why bother? I just drink more! Even so I can maintain a healthy 'buzz' without falling over. The occasional bottle of dark rum or bourbon makes a nice change of pace.

I've been down the 'herbal' route, but I seem to be immune to the effects of THC. Even the home grown variety. All that expense for good seeds, the hours of tending the plants; all for nothing. Stopped 'cold turkey' and never had any withdrawal symptoms. I'll stick to the pain killers my GP prescribes for me although they have been proven to be ineffective against arthritic pains. Mind you, they do work if washed down with a snifter or two!

Bob and Jan,

Clinical trials of medicinal cannabis derivatives are almost certain to start in NSW following the recent gift of $33.7 million to Sydney University.

http://www.manningrivertimes.com.au/story/3152097/local-lambert-donates-337m-to-medical-research/?cs=1467

It is my understanding the THC component is not effective medicinally but other compounds derived from the plant especially the oil has beneficial effects.

We are seeing press accounts now, stating that medical C. is not nearly as effective as people were led to believe. This seems to mesh with some of your experiences.
Guess the absolute truth was left out by the advocates. Doesn't always make the best story anyway.

I am skeptical about the pro cannibis lobby. They say its harmless and even good for you. All drugs have effects otherwise it would be pointless taking them.

The variation of the type and how its grown effect how good or bad depending upon how one is looking at it. Its too hit and miss.

If a medical use is found it will be in pill form. It won't be a circle of mates puffing away.

Cannabis is like a social thing at one level. Like beer at a party.

I myself being old can quite happily interact without being stoned.

However if someone wants to smoke dope then its none of my business.

In another thread someone said about unemployable people.

I wouldn't employ a dope smoker because they do stupid things. Like filling a gas lighter and firing it up with a cloud of butane around them. He was lucky it went boff and he lost his eyebrows. Overlong conversations with no conclusion that makes sense.

Also cannabis IS addictive in a phycological sense.

I think properly formulated pills are best not a flower power hippy opinion.

If tobacco causes cancer then probably smoking cannabis will do the same.

Also last but not least its illegal in the UK end of. The low level of the offence would still mean a black mark on my ledger. I am ex civil service. Part time work is still possible but even a sniff of illegal drugs and the civil service will blank you. They won't say why they just dont talk to you. And thinking that the cops because one is old and has a chronic aliment wont work because the copper would then be breaking the law.
