This morning I went over to see an old mate who is still in the garage trade and he showed me a Montevirdi coupe, which didn't select the gears in the autobox.

The engine is a Chysler V8 fitted with a Chysler 3 speed auto. The gear selector is push button and the gearbox actuator is from a Shadow ( indentified by having a screw in multiplug ).

Once I told him this he said thats a big problem solved because there are no parts what so ever for this car.

Turns out that the one of the micro-switches is shot.

He was about to order a retro actuator for a hot rod from the USA which cost $2000. New switch on order at £15 from Radio Spares.

A follow up from the previous posting.

The Honeywell micro switch complete with roller turned up and he fitted it.

All the gears select except no park.

This car has a relay that is wired ( normally closed )so that when the ignition is turned off the park wire for the gearbox actuator becomes live .

With the igniton on and park not selected the wire was dead.Turn the ignition off and the wire becomes live. Ignition on and selected park and the wire becomes live.

Turns out that the black with brown tracer wire which is the park wire had broken off the back of the plug. We probaly did that when we unpluged the actuator.

The pins in the plug are crimped. So we soldered a short piece of wire to the pin and that to the black/brown wire.

It now all works as it should.

The Shadow is the same except when keys are removed which disconnects the relay windings ( auto park relay) causing the normal closeed contacts to contact thus making the park wire live, and the gearbox selects park.

Leaving the keys in the ignition will cause the relay to remain energised and will drain the battery over a peroid.

Also the Monteverdi has 2 relays wired to the brake lights. These are connected to drive and reverse. Drive and reverse wires only become live when the button(s) are pushed and the brakes are on. So drive and reverse cannot be selected unless the driver has the brake on.

When an electrical system is logically examined it becomes simple to understand.

We did all this using a Shadow wiring diagram which is not the right one and a test bulb.
