Today I had a look at a rolling chassis for a Look a like Ford GT40 with GM 350 ci and PRV transaxle.

It has a conventional hyd power rack with a electric hydraulic pump and separate oil tank.

The pump came from a Citroen Saxo uses 70 amps at 12volts. The pump runs all the time and has a demand valve like a belt driven pump to save amps. It runs via a relay that senses ignition pulses.

He ran the pump up without the engine running and it is quiet until the steering is turned and then it's quite hydraulically noisy.

He fitted it because the engine is in the rear and he didn't want long hydraulic hoses. The pump sits just by the rack and the pipes are 8" long. The.system runs at 750 psi and can be adjusted easily to lower the pressure and the assist. But that can't be done without taking a bit of the pump and altering it. However he has decided to have full assistance in town with a switch to turn the pump off for track days.

I thought that the system is neat and tidy, and when the engine is running the pump won't be heard over a flat plane crankshaft V8 on straight through exhaust pipes.
