Bob UK can you help as I remember you faced a similar problem? Bill Coburn - could you refer this to George Shores as he should be able to help. If you need a tow bar/hitch to mount a lifting device then I would suggest a specialist such as Hayman-Reece due to the attachment difficulties under the vehicle. | ||

I am also interested in a towbar to suit my SSII. I live in Australia (near NSW / QLD border). Have noted Introcar sell them, and have seen some vehicles around with towbars fitted. Would like to purchase or get copy a suitable design so that I can have one fabricated. Any advice? Thanks. Brad C | ||

Brad, I would talk to a specialist such as club member George Shores from Canberra who has his own towbar business 02 6255 3366 or Hayman Reese. Installation would require a suitable sub-frame to be fabricated to avoid structural damage to the vehicle. | ||

The tow bar hitch is not a difficult job to make and install. Four important things. First make sure you are legaly able to make and fit in the country of use. Second you will need a tower drill or be able to access one for the large holes in the angle iron. Third make sure the structure of the car is not corroded [Box sections] Four Check the diff crossmember mounts and bolts etc also the rest of the brillo mounts and the torque tube mountings. The rear bumper must first be taken off and the proceed to measure up useing the end bumper mounts. The loading is taken mainly through the centre angle fixing below and above within the boot floor. From memory only three holes to drill,the rest are already there. Solid as a rock! Have just towed the transporter trailer with a tractor, and that GM box is just magic. I made mine sometime ago and have towed a quality caravan a good many miles in the peak district also on the continent with no problems. A truly excellent car with the GTW and with the self leveling suspension. I was going to remove the tow bar but with the new regs comming into play [EEC] it looks as though it will be the only vehicle to be legal within the towing regs in the business. It beats the twin wheel Transit so i am imformed. Must look into the load ratings [Tyres] again.    | ||

Hi David and Patrick, Thank you for your responses. David, I’ve since left another message for George Shores (on Friday 18th March)… I guess he’ll reply when he can get to it. Thanks too for the photos Patrick. I’ve printed them (in B & W) and I’ll have a look under the car this evening. Legally, I am not permitted to fabricate my own tow bar, though am very capable of doing so. But a local towbar fitter said that if I can supply them with details they would be prepared to build one.
