Our 1990 Mulsanne S has excess play in at least one of the upper ball joints. I don't know about the lower BJs yet. I fitted left and right upper kits 25000 and 20000 miles ago respectively. The n/s lower was replaced by a specialist 16000 miles ago so fingers crossed on that one. Question how tight / what torque should the castellated nut, UR14595, on the upper BJ be? I can’t remember Can anyone advise on the fitting of shims on the lower ball joint. Many thanks, Darryl |

Further to above. After digging about in the service manual I've found reference to locking ring on the top of the ball (upper) ball joint. The torque is 150-175 Ft/Lbs.so I guess that answers my question about the upper ball joint. I've also found the answer to the lower ball joint question re shims. Regards, |

Both the upper and lower are adjustable. The upper is easy after tapping back the locking flange on the threaded cap. The lower requires removal of the stub axle assembly then removal of shims on the housing to tighten it up. To adjust the ball pin to the correct torque you need an inch/foot torque wrench. Without one you will have to guess but it should take a little force to turn the ball pin once the housing is tightened up. While you are in there remove the grease plugs and install grease fittings in them so they can be greased in the future. The torque figures and procedures are all covered in the workshop manual. Hi. Where is this plug? Is it possible to retrofit a grease nipple. Thanks Mike |

Another question. Are kits for the lower ball joint available? Both Flying Spares and Introcar list the lower kit, UR73256K, as suitable for: 1965-1980 Silver Shadow I, II & Bentley T1, T2. FS advise me that it won't fit a SZ yet my records indicate that's what was fitted to a lower BJ in 2011. |

Introcar have confirmed that the lower ball joint kit (UR73256KT) will fit SZ cars and they will amend their web page. |
