I used a FRAM TH400 filter kit purchased from Summit Racing [USA] for DRH14434 - note this kit includes the important O ring for the top of the modulator pipe from the filter [this must be replaced at the same time as the filter as a failed O-ring allows air to be sucked in causing erratic gear changes]:

Yes, I believe the gap you can see is a fluid gallery to act as a sump to ensure 100% fluid flow through the transmission valve bodies with no aeration.

Fram are well-respected filter manufacturers with many years of experience and are known for their quality products.

Both have filters in.

The visible one - fluid it's on top of the fabric and is sucked downwards through the fabric.

The empty looking one - fluid flows under the fabric and is sucked up through the fabric.

I think the theory is that crap will settle on the fabric on the visible type and settle on the metal on the other type.

Both do the same job.

Pickup o"ring is imperative.

Get a dip stick o'ring if sump entry type.

Check your selector shaft seal is not leaking before you start.

Messy old job. Enjoy :-)

Michael...that is patently ridiculous!
Go to your local bearing and seals place and match up a modern Viton rubber seal.
The seals on offer, you don't know how long they have been sitting on the shelf and how old they are.
Just my thoughts....I have always had success at
matching up seals with a good guy behind the counter who knows his onions

It is 150% important that the suction tube is completely and fully sealed and tight or the gearbox will suck in air and will be ruined very quickly indeed.

The filter should be able to hang without the bolt holding it up.

Is that price from who you bought the filter off?

Never match to an old o'ring because there is no way of telling how deformed it is.

Given that this filter is a long service item , 24k miles , why not use the genuine Bentley part. I guess that most owners probably do less than 10k miles per year.I change the filters at 24k miles, but the ATF every year or 10k miles whichever comes first.

far be it for me to rain on anyone's parade but it is not a unique part.
Any seal specialist worth his salt can tell the difference between a new 'O' ring and one that has been in service for a few years....easy enough to match and you buy them for cents rather that inflated dollars/pounds...common sense will prevail.
Making sure as Paul so rightly says, that the filter is a solid push fit.

Given the time involved in going to the seal and bearing shop one errand to buy an O ring in my view is false economy, and as Paul said if it sucks air that the box could be destroyed, is it worth it,

Richard.

Hi All
Thanks for all your advice and opinions.
I know what you mean Paul, I have heard of people putting 2 O rings on to make sure, don't know if you've heard of that?
Mark sorry it's not a RR/B box it's a GM box so the part number is a GM number even on the RR/B parts list.
This is why I think a GM part will be better value than the inflated RR/B price, why do they always charge more for RR/B bits grrr.
Hi Maxwell I don't have a pattern to shop with (yet)lol and can't find the spec.
Hi Richard I agree but it costs nothing to shop around online, wish I was rich like you lol.
Thanks again
Mike

Michael, you asked why R-R prices are higher than any one else. They say it is extra quality control. In the 70's the dealer price for screen for Cloud 111 was £600+. Autoglass £200. I was asked by insurance company to qualify this. The response from R-R was their man could see issues with glass that no one else could see including glass manufacturer's own team, so the rejection rate was very high. Manufacturer then sold "rejected" screens to Autglass, they said they had never had complaint!! The point, is there an element of overkill here, surely if the filter is good enough for GM quality is that not enough?
