Wondering what is a good price for a quality paint job in today's economy? I'm in the southern region of the US.

I need to have my 1968 Fixed-Head Coupe painted. My guy says he will not take the job unless the paint is stripped to the metal. He said the paint will be "showroom"! He quoted $5,000. This will be the 11th car he has painted for me! His work is excellent!

Today's quote was much more than he charged for my last car, 1982 Spur, he painted in 2019. He said the cost of materials has "skyrocked" in the past 3 years!

I just need general feedback.

Richard

$5K for a bare metal respray sounds cheap to me. There's a lot of work involved in removing the old paint & ideally the front & rear windscreen should be removed & refitted afterwards with new seals.

Sounds like he wants you to do the strip down to bare metal. If that is true, I would do that.
Getting things prepped for paint is where the labour is it.
Removing molding lights etc. even masking things off.
I sign of a shitty paint job is getting over-spray in the wheel wells and not looking after the inside door jamb.

The rubber on the windshield can be cut to get the glass out, so ask the painter if the price includes the labour to get the glass back in.

You would supply the rubber.

Full resprays are usually over 10k. He is likely shooting a single stage. 2k is more in materials due to the separate components. I recently paid over 460/gal for PPG's best clear, so the materials are not cheap. One of the most critical parts is board sanding the panels absolutely flat. There is alot of work also after the top coat dries. The top coat must be cut again until flat and then polished to a final finish. Everyone has an idea of a showroom finish and the results can vary greatly. Try to see previous work.

I feel extremely comfortable with the painter. He has painted 10 cars for me, including my 190SL and a 1962 XKE OTS. I have booked him for early January. He said it will take him approximately 2 months. Hopefully, I will update the list toward Spring, 2025!

So he's taking spare shop time at the end of the day to work on it. If you can call any shop time "spare".
