RRCC - So looking at the detail RRMD service history & MoT's the elapsed mile recorder (within the dash speedometer) was working faultlessly however, since being in storage for a few years the mile recorder has stopped working. Its electronic pulse type (no cable) First quick look would indicate everything is original and all connections are correct, before going deeper I thought I'd ask here and hopefully the forums experience will find the shortest route to a fix. | ||

After doing some research looks like plastic cog in speedometer broken is favourite, many for sale on ebay may also be a clue. Will take a look tomorrow. | ||

I have rebuilt several Shadows and Spurs/Spirits up until 1985. Normally, it's a small white gear (pic) whose "teeth" are stripped or the gear slips on the shaft. I did have a 89 Turbo R in which the trip odometer mechanism had broken on one end. I simply super glued it back. Bowling Ryan in Bolton (UK)can sort that speedo 'cog problem' - a common occurrence, never reset it while on the move. (Message approved by david_gore) | ||

Opened the speedometer and found the white drive cog/gear shown previously broken in to 3 bits, now removed waiting new 20x23 cog/gear. | ||

Note: setting the elapsed mileage counter when moving causes drive gear mesh problems. They are most comfortable at rest. | ||

Very rewarding to do the repair ones self, common problem with the plastic drive to break after age. New gears no problem resetting mileage on the move. 3D printed no problem so far on the 968 that i repaired, keep a spare set in case the other car gives up cheap as chips  | ||

Mine was the cog in 5 bits, order new off internet £18(looks like it was 3D printed), cog needed some minor fettling i.e. ID to small opened up with 600 grit rolled up and boss was to long as could not get C clip on post, again just used flat surface with some 600. Hardest part was removing the bezel but doable just take your time. All back together working perfectly. |
