Hello all,
I recently serviced LRH32854 and whilst the car was on a lift and holding the rear wheels with my hands at the 9 and 3 o'clock position I have movement whilst rocking back and forth.
Should there be no movement?
I had the wheel bearings replaced by a RR mechanic when I purchased the car 2 years ago.
Do they just need regreassing and packing or complete replacement again with the required kit and nuts. I think the nut is a one use item.
Happy to buy a tool from Kelly and try myself ( maybe)
Thanks for your insight in advance.
Cheers Eric, Adelaide.

Eric,

During my custodianship of DRH14434, I encountered a problem of worn rear axle bearings due to water penetration of the original felt seals which necessitated their replacement.

I have documented my experience in the following thread on this forum - if you would like to have a personal discussion with me, please message me through this forum with your contact details and I can give your further advice based on my experience.

Fortunately, your car will have the later lip seals in the rear hub which overcame the water penetration problem with the original felt seals on the early Shadow & derivative vehicles.

IMHO purchasing Kelly Opfar's specialised rear hub tool is the best option available to you for this task.

Kelly has an excellent tool for "splitting the hub". One must set the bearing clearance and the stub axle nut is set at 525 ft lbs. I have done this several times Fortunately I have a Snap-on SQL-600 torque wrench for this.
I would highly suggest reading up on this procedure.

There should be some movement felt as you have described, the amount felt at the tire though is a bit subjective. The end float on the hub bearings is set at .002 to .004 thou when they are assembled. The amount of play felt when grasping the tire will of course be a multiple of that amount if you are wiggling it side to side. If you pull it straight in and out, not wiggling side to side, more that .004, then time to repack and readjust them. To do an accurate check, remove the wheel and place a dial gauge on the top of the rear suspension arm with the indicator on the back side of the brake disc and pull in and out and note the reading.

Thanks, David, Robert and Jim.
There is certainly no noise or rumble on rotation.
