On our Silver Cloud 1, a Rolls Royce mechanic suggested that start from 2nd on the drive train and MANUALLY change gears up, to avoid savage gear shifts when its operating in automatic mode.

Has anyone experienced this and is it detrimental to the system?

Second speed starting.

I use this feature on the R-Type often, and like it very much as it makes pulling away very smooth indeed.

Originally, second speed starting was not possible on my car, even though the control box was made to work this way but was blanked off, so I modified the control box to match the later cars by drilling out the hole and fitting a spring. For smooth starts, second speed starting is good, and you can back off the throttle when shifting to third gear. This especially useful if you wish to pamper your passengers. However, by the wierd way the planet gearsets are connected by the fluid flywheel, the engine speed at standstill is decreased and the fluid flywheel is loaded more than usual in "2". For long stops at the lights select "4" and only shift to "2" when the lights go green. I have read some concern about using this feature, but doubt any damage can occur if you do not leave it in "2" while stationary for too long. If you select "2", the car will start in second gear, but will kick down to first on full throttle.

Dear Richard,
Thankyou for your information. Since I posted the last letter we have had the gearbox completely rebuilt. It started with adjusting the bands but unfortunealty the whole thing had to come out as many problems were found.
Lots of parts were worn and a badly cracked drum (we were told this is as inherent problem only due to lack of maintenence re band adjusting), so after 6 weeks and many thousands of dollars we have a gearbox nearly as good as new !

Have just taken our Silver Cloud 1 back to the Gearbox specialist as the pin that locks the car into park (in the reverse position) had snapped.
Is this a common problem and has anyone experienced this? Any feedback would be greatly apreciated.

I have just had the gearbox on my cloud 1 rebuilt.The gear change was not good to say the very least.
The findings of the RR mechanic was that the box had been rebuilt in the past, and non genuine part had been used.
As a result we have replaced all of the internal bands and plates and bushes etc with genuine parts.
I have heard of the pin breaking or seazing on the park selection but do not think that this is a majour problem with all gearboxes.
My gearbox now is getting smoother by the mile and I hope for many good motoring miles to come.

Important is to use the genuine wavy clutch plates. I used GM ones sold on pretence as a new modification by a shonky Sydney RR parts outlet once. They were flat and made changes far too quick, and the tyres chirped shifting into second gear. Needless to say I replaced them with the compliant genuine ones immediately.

These boxes are almost bulletproof, but I have heard of split planet gear drums and the like. Fortunately there are good secondhand spares around, and I am sure you could buy a parking pawl from Brian Thompson:
