Hi All,

The cooling tube in the block, is it open at both ends as I seem to have blobs of goop at either end

More information would be helpful.
e.g Vehicle - engine
If you are perhaps referring to the brass water gallery rail, it is blanked off with a small plate at the rear of the block, held on by small (not sure if 2BA or 3/16) screws that are very difficult to get at. Often the screws and/or plate corrode causing leaks there.

Have a look at www.kda132.com, find the technical section and the article on cylinder blocks, see page 20 for the details on the majority of coolant galleries.

The article in kda132 regarding the water galleries is excellent, also shows the blanking plate at the rear of the block.
