I've just put Bess (B290MD) in for a new exhaust system by Garry at Hornsby Performance Mufflers (Sydney north). The rear half of the exhaust manifold started to crack some years ago and I thought it would be okay to hold it together with a jubilee clip and fibreglass heat strapping. Garry says that this strapping has caused the cast iron around the crack to retain too much heat. The result is that over time the metal's deteriorated to the point where the manifold can't be welded, so it's probably unsalvageable. He can braze it up to get Bess on the road again but he doesn't recommend it for the long term. Does anyone know where we could find a replacement rear half manifold for a 1951 MD-series (4.5 litre) Mk VI, preferably less than a few days away from Sydney (i.e. not overseas)? | ||

Hi Chris, I would get a second opinion before you discard reclamation welding as an option. I suggest you contact Baker & Provan at St Marys and let them have a look at the manifold; if it too small for them, they will most likely know a suitable place they can refer you to for further advice. http://www.bakerprovan.com.au/Baker%20&%20Provan%20Capability%20-%20Heavy%20Engineering%20&%20Reclamation%20Specialists.pdf I would also contact the Head Welding Teacher at NSW TAFE as another possible source of advice. The absolute guru for welding cast iron was Richard Butcher of the NSW Railways however he is now retired and I do not have contact details for him. Richard wrote a book on the Everleigh Railway Workshops which includes a lot of information about some of the "impossible" welding jobs done at Everleigh in the steam era. | ||

Chris, you rule out foreigners. I just had a water pump from Introcar in 36 hours to Canberra by their normal courier Countdown last week (ordered Monday night, on the doorstep first thing Wednesday) ! It often takes longer for bits to arrive from Melbourne. They do sell those MkVI manifolds ex-stock. Call them tonight and it will arrive by Friday. RT. ps: all the specialist repairs on R-Type manifolds were short-lived. I have done a few in, but the flexible bellows after the turn of the downpipes cured that on my all-stainless system. | ||

Chris, these Exhaust manifolds can be welded properly even though they are cast iron.Its not a problem for getting this fixed. If you get stuck it can be welded in Pa USA. Check this guy out! http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/pts/2733605709.html |
