This Sunday Aug 1st, on ABC TV new history programme, Rewind , 9.25p.m., there will be a 5-min segment on the Phantom V, 5VF159. This car is now in the Sir Henry Royce Foundation museum but was the vice - regal car which was pelted with eggs once when Sir John Kerr was a passenger. It is also the PV which travelled on the 1997 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge. Watch it if you can!

I just thought that I would let everyone know that a former Vice Regal/Royal Phantom V is on display at the National Motor Museum at Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills here in .S.A.I believe that the car has been used by several members of the Royal Family over the years including H.M.The Queen, the late Princess Diana and H.R.H Prince Phillip.

Just a footnote to the Royal Phantom at Birdwood. I was there a couple of days ago and the powers that be have decided to remove both right hand doors so that the tourists can see into the car better!!! Is there no indignity that theese lovely cars will not have to face? However and to be fare I must also point out that St Edward's Crown has been put back above the wind screen.

I understand that Phantom 5VF159 is to be put back into Royal Duty next year with the tour of Her Majesty The Queen & His Royal Highness The Duke Of Edinborough. It's good to see these cars are being used again & makes Me think even more that Keating & co should not have sold them in the first place.

Seeing our Heads of State (Prime Ministers, G-Gs and the like),traipsing around in Statesmans just doesn't seem to cut the mustard.

I was at Birdwood last week, and the Phantom is still sans doors on the right side. I agree with Robert, it will be a sad day when these cars are finally put down, which I would imagine will be when HRH finally calls it a day.

I had a face to face one to one chat with HER in 1992 in country NSW town, and later watched her depart in a Rolls-Royce especially transported there for the short journey to/from the airport.

Its all about respect and dignity, - there is not enough of it about these days....and there is neither attached to a Statesman.

I remember feeling how ironic it was to see BMW motorcycles escorting a Royal procession in London a few years ago.

And so I felt quite honoured when in Broken Hill two years ago. We had been at the Pro Hart gallery there, - Pro has two Bentleys parked out the front, - and the NSW Governor was there in her Statesman. Then quite by accident we got on our BMW motorcycle to visit an attraction just outside town. Imaging my surprise to see the Governor's car and entourage following us, BMW escort again....

I'm with you Peter. A few years ago I managed to see H.R.H The Duchess Of Kent(one of the World's nicest ladies)& speak to her when she visited .S.A. A Statesman was the mode of transport & no it just did'nt cut the mustard. Oh & the B.M.W. police bikes were on duty to!

Hi. I was just wondering if anyone knows the chassis number of the Phantom now on display at Birdwood. By knowing this I could perhaps find out more infornation about the car.

Hi & a thankyou to Mark for emailing me with the chassis number for the Birdwood Phantom V. It is number 5VF37.While this car did some Royal work it was mostly used by the Govenor General. The car was bought off the Government by the Earl of Stradebroke who donated it to the museum some years ago.

I noticed a program titled 'Vice Regal Rolls-Royce' in our local (Melbourne TV Guide) on Sunday 31st August at 5.50 pm on the ABC. I am assuming it is a repeat of 5VF159. Check your local guides and watch to find out. The program only goes for ten minutes so be careful not to blink.

Hi Mark,
I guessed you meant 31st July and not August and I watched the program tonight. Thanks for the tip.
Pity it didn't last for at least half an hour but it was worth it anyway.
Cheers,
Rob
