Not to be outdone, RRMC will undoubtedly create the world's best SUV but would you ever take one off-road????

We did during the wool boom of the 1950's - some property owners were reputed to have carried sheep in the back seat of their Rolls-Royce vehicles.

If you look at the customers of this type of car, they take them into the dunes or down to the yacht harbour, they carry their dogs to the country," he says.

"It is also quite a casual, relaxed car that you can also take to the opening of the opera. So that is not an easy task for us to balance because it needs to cater for all types of needs."

My Landrover Defender has done all of that and they effortlessly pull a six wheel cattle trailer. I am sure my clients would volunteer to give it a good workout on the farms although hosing the carpets down might cause a problem !

You colonials won't have seen the latest episode of Top Gear. They use a trio of luxury cars, including a Bentley, to herd cattle. Admittedly they weren't doing too well until the choppers gave them a hand.

Have a look here

Somebody has made a stab at what he thinks the new off-roader model might look like.

I think an estate RR would sell well. About the size of a 245 Volvo would be ideal. Straight six 4.5 litre. 250bhp Keep the weight down. Don't make a saloon version, so that it's a stand alone model.

BMW could easily build the car on a 5 series platform and design a big six.
