Brooklands 'R' 66221, I had all my auxiliary belts changed a couple of months ago and when the car was delivered back it was noted that the A/C compressor is 'ticking' like a very quiet tappet noise. If you turn off the A/C the noise stops instantly. The air con still blows very cold.

Is this the end for my poor old compressor? If it is, it may be the end of my tenure of this expensive car, the thing has turned me into a pauper! :-)

Hi David,
Try disconnecting the a/c belt and see what happens

Hi David
Maybe your gas is a little low?
Maybe they all do it?
Maybe turn up the radio?
Maybe stop worrying?
Mine sounds like a train still works though!

If it is a case of 'they all do that Sir' then I am okay with it. But, if it is the first sign of impeding doom, I'd rather know so I can start saving/fretting/planning the bonfire! :-)

To be honest, I had never noticed this noise until the new mechanic at Specialist cars pointed it out, it may have been doing it since I've had the car for all I know.

David, spray a little WD40 on the belt and see if the noise stops. If not, my compressor on my 1987 Bentley 8 got noisy when the conical filter at the expansion valve got clogged with filth. Degassed, cleaned filter, Vacuum and regas. perfect !. This fault showed on the pressure gauges as too high, high pressure and too low, low pressure. Took a couple of hours to sort.

Hi Mark and David, I had the same problem, caused a vacuum to the inlet of the compressor and it was not happy!!

I concur with Mark on this.
When was the last time the system was degassed and
expansion valve cleaned and check and receiver-dryer
checked or replaced?
And make sure the correct amout of PAG oil is placed in the system.

Many are noisy or rattle. But low gas and oil levels can make it much worse.

Also . . Many years have quick connect valves in the ends of the hoses.

Look for a extra long connections with 3 or 4 hex sizes on the end of the pipes and hoses .

These were to allow the hoses to be pre charged before the cars were assembled and just tightened up at the factory production line.

Unfortunately over time the valves start to become over restrictive as the seals swell.

Some can just be removed. Some you have to take the guts out of and keep the housing in line.

So if you ever empty a system, take them out while you're there.

Paul is spot on. We just did 90my with exactly that problem. Removed valves sorted noise issues AND made system cooling much better.

Is the ticking consistent or every so often? If every so often, it would be the clutch cycling the compressor on and off. Put gauges on and check pressure.
