I'm trying to check some research on oil pump drive and driven gears, particularly on SY, SYL and L410B motors.

There has been so much messing around over the matter that maybe we could establish some definitive data.

My understanding is that, from the SCII/S2 through Silver Shadow (II) chassis 38983 in 1979, the gear is steel for the drive gear and brass (almost certainly read aluminium bronze) for the driven gear.

For SY and SYL motors:

Drive: Steel UE5767
Driven: Brass UE UE5832

The above applies to SY and SYL motors alike (SYL motors are the Long-stroke, 6750cc, ones in SY cars from chassis 8742 onwards).

From SY chassis 38984, with the introduction of the L410B (L for Long-stroke, 410 for 410, actually 412, cubic inches) motor (the SYL was re-designated L410B when modified in several areas of detail):

Drive: Brass UE31024 (Interchangeable with UE42976)
Driven: Steel UE42783

All SZs (basically a 410B but with non-detachable crankshaft counterweights and proper crankshaft sealing for all markets at last):

Drive: Brass UE42976 (Interchangeable with UE31024)
Driven: Steel UE42783

Note that mixing SY/SYL gears with L410B gears, ending up with steel-steel or brass-brass, is often established to be a disaster formula, whilst fitting the later types as a pair is a great advantage..

Apparently, the L410B arrangement wears significantly less than the earlier one. The best information so far is that the SY/SYL gears should be inspected for wear and play at just 120,000 miles (it only needs the sump to be removed to do this), and the L410B ones at 250,000 miles. These figures may be extended by at least 50% when synthetic oil is used.

Any comments or better data ?
